Carpendale, West Virginia
Carpendale is a town in Mineral County, West Virginia, United States, and part of the 'Cumberland, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area'. The population was 977 at the 2010 census. Carpendale was incorporated on January 2, 1990 by the Circuit Court. The town is a combination of three subdivisions of which its name reflects: Carpenters Addition, Millerdale I, and Millerdale II. There are no stores in Carpendale and there is only one road in and out of the town.
Ridgeley, West Virginia
Ridgeley is a town in Mineral County, West Virginia, United States, and part of the Cumberland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 675 at the 2010 census. Ridgeley was initially known as St. Clairsville, named for Sir John St Clair, Lt Colonel and Quartermaster General for the British General Edward Braddock. St Clair accompanied Braddock on his ill-fated march on Fort Duquesne and his disastrous defeat on July 9, 1755.

Fort Ohio
Fort Ohio (also known as the "New Store") was a stockade fort erected by Job Pearsall in 1749 on the present site of Ridgeley, West Virginia. The building was of log construction, 45 feet long and 25 feet wide, with two stories. Its name comes from the Ohio Company which did have a trading post at that location. The Ohio Company found success because a trail across the Allegheny Mountains from the Potomac River at Cumberland to near modern-day Pittsburgh offered a direct route to the Ohio River.
Bowling Green, Maryland
The communities of Roberts Place, Bowling Green & Potomac Park are located along McMullen Highway between Cumberland to the north, Cresaptown to the south, the Potomac River to the east and Haystack Mountain to the west. For many years, the community was mostly farmland but was later divided into building lots by the Buchanan, Roberts and Long families.
Cumberland Race Track
The Cumberland Race Track (1924-1961), also known as the Fairgo Race Track, was located just outside the west side of Cumberland, Maryland along McMullen Highway at the location of the present day Allegany County Fairgrounds. The Track facility boasted 300 horse stalls and was the first half-mile track in the state of Maryland for racing horses. The Track was founded in 1924 when the Fairgo company was formed by the stock holders of the Cumberland Fair Associations.
Cumberland Dam
At Cumberland, Maryland a dam was maintained across the North Branch of the Potomac River by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company for the purpose of diverting water of the river into the head of the canal. The Dam impounded water over a distance of a mile, causing back water for about 3 miles up the river. Above the dam is the mouth of Wills Creek. This dam was built sometime before 1850.
Allegany County Fairgrounds
The Allegany County Fairgrounds is located just west of Cumberland, Maryland along McMullen Highway. Throughout the year the fairground holds musical concerts, car races, and private events. Once a year the Allegany County fair is held on the grounds, called the Allegany County Fair and AgExpo. As of 2006, the annual fair is an 8-day event customarily in the middle of July.
