2001 Nisqually earthquake
The Nisqually earthquake was an intraslab earthquake, occurring at 10:54 am PST on February 28, 2001. One of the largest recorded earthquakes in Washington state history, it measured 6.8 on the moment magnitude scale and lasted approximately 45 seconds. The epicenter of the earthquake was Anderson Island, about 17 km northeast of Olympia. The focus was at a depth of 52 km .
McNeil Island
McNeil Island is an island in western Puget Sound, located just west of Steilacoom, Washington, with a land area of 17.177 km² (6.6319 sq mi). It lies just north of Anderson Island. Fox Island is to the north, across Carr Inlet. To the west McNeil Island is separated from Key Peninsula by Pitt Passage. The Washington mainland lies to the east, across the south basin of Puget Sound.
Anderson Island (Washington)
Anderson Island is the southernmost island in Puget Sound and is part of Pierce County, Washington, United States. It is accessible by boat or a 20 minute ferry ride from Steilacoom. Anderson Island lies just south of McNeil Island. To the northwest Key Peninsula lies across Drayton Passage. The south basin of Puget Sound separates the island from the mainland to the southeast, while to the southwest the Nisqually Reach of Puget Sound separates the island from the mainland.
Special Commitment Center
The Special Commitment Center in the state of Washington is a post-sentence treatment institution for Sexually Violent Predators, located on McNeil Island. It is controversial in that it allows the involuntary commitment of sex offenders who have served their prison sentence. However, as in other psychiatric institutions across the country, civil commitment is based on dangerousness related to a mental abnormality.
Pitt Passage
Pitt Passage is a strait, in the southern of part of Puget Sound in the U.S. state of Washington. Entirely within Pierce County, Pitt Passage separates Key Peninsula from McNeil Island. Pitt Passage was named Pit Passage by Charles Wilkes during the Wilkes Expedition of 1838-1842.
Eagle Island State Park (Washington)
Eagle Island State Park in Pierce County, Washington is one of the Washington State Parks. It is a 10 acres marine park on Eagle Island in Balch Passage between McNeil and Anderson Islands in South Puget Sound. Available activities include beachcombing, birdwatching, and wildlife viewing. The park is administered as a satellite park of Jarrell Cove State Park. This minuscule island was named not for the bird but for Harry Eagle, one of the party members of the Wilkes Expedition of 1841.
McNeil Island Corrections Center
The McNeil Island Corrections Center (MICC) was a Washington State Department of Corrections prison on McNeil Island in unincorported Pierce County, Washington, near Steilacoom. Opened in 1875, it had previously served as a territorial correctional facility and then a Federal Bureau of Prisons facility.
