Lexington, Virginia
Lexington is an independent city, separate from but surrounded by Rockbridge County in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The population was 7,042 in 2010. Lexington is about 55 minutes east of the West Virginia border and is about 50 miles north of Roanoke, Virginia. It was first settled in 1777. It is home to the Washington and Lee University (W&L) and Virginia Military Institute (VMI). It is the county seat of Rockbridge County.
Washington and Lee University
Washington and Lee University (Washington and Lee or W&L) is a private liberal arts university in Lexington, Virginia, United States. The classical school from which Washington and Lee descended was established in 1749 as Augusta Academy, about 20 miles north of its present location. In 1776 it was renamed Liberty Hall in a burst of revolutionary fervor. The academy moved to Lexington in 1780, when it was chartered as Liberty Hall Academy, and built its first facility near town in 1782.
Virginia Military Institute
The Virginia Military Institute (VMI), located in Lexington, Virginia, is the oldest state-supported military college in the United States. It is the only one of the six senior military colleges whose students are military cadets pursuing bachelor's degrees. VMI offers cadets strict military discipline; a spartan, physically and academically demanding environment; and degrees in 14 disciplines in engineering, the sciences and the liberal arts.
Washington and Lee University School of Law
The Washington and Lee University School of Law (W&L Law) is a private American Bar Association-accredited law school located in Lexington in the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia. Facilities are currently on the historic campus of Washington and Lee University in Sydney Lewis Hall. W&L Law is known as one of the smallest top law schools in the country, with a total enrollment of approximately 400 students in Juris Doctor and Master of Laws programs and a 9.52-to-1 student to faculty ratio.
