Denton County, Texas
Denton County is a county in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2010 census, its population was 662,614. {{#invoke:Footnotes|sfn}} Part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex (and including small parts of both cities), it is one of the fastest-growing counties in the United States. {{#invoke:Footnotes|sfn}} The county seat is Denton. The county, which was named for John B. Denton, was established in 1846.
University of North Texas
The University of North Texas (UNT), based in Denton, is a public institution of higher education and research committed to a wide array of sciences, engineering fields, liberal arts, fine arts, performing arts, public policy, and graduate professional schools. Ten colleges, two schools, an early admissions math and science academy for exceptional high-school-age students from across the state, and a library system comprise the university.
UNT Coliseum
The UNT Coliseum, informally known as the Super Pit, is a 10,040-seat multi-purpose arena in Denton, Texas, United States. It was built in 1973. It is home to the North Texas Mean Green men's and women's basketball teams. It hosted the Southland Conference men's basketball tournament in 1988 and 1989 and the Sun Belt Conference men's basketball tournament in 2005. The nickname "Super Pit" came about due to its proximity to the "Snake Pit", formerly the North Texas Men's Gymnasium.
Denton High School
Denton High School is a high school located in Denton, Texas. Denton High was the first high school to open in Denton. It has since moved three times. DHS was established in 1884. In 1910 Denton High School moved to what is now Calhoun Middle School. In 1957, DHS moved again, this time to its current location on Fulton Street. In the 1990s, DHS yielded grades 10-12 to the newly opened Billy Ryan High School.
Little Chapel in the Woods
The Little Chapel in the Woods is a chapel constructed mainly for meditation and prayer. It was built in 1939, on the Denton campus of Texas Womans University, and was dedicated by First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Inside the chapel, there are many pieces of artwork, as well as stained glass windows. It was designed by regional architect O'Neil Ford.
Denton Community Theatre
The Denton Community Theatre is a local theatre located in Denton, Texas in the United States. It serves as one of the oldest community theatres in the Denton area having been in existence for over 25 years. It is located at the historical Campus Theatre on West Hickory Street. Throughout the Denton community, people, businesses, and educators are working together to better implement the arts into the Northern Texas area.
University of North Texas College of Music
The University of North Texas College of Music, based in Denton, is a comprehensive music school with the largest enrollment of any music institution accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. It is the oldest and first in the world to offer a degree in jazz studies. As one of thirteen colleges and schools at the University of North Texas, it has been among the largest music institutions of higher learning in North America since the 1940s.
Downtown Denton Transit Center
Downtown Denton Transit Center is a multimodal transit center that provides DCTA bus and A-train commuter rail connections in Denton, Texas. It is east of the Denton County Courthouse-on-the-Square and is the northern terminus of the A-train. The Downtown Denton Transit Center station is one of two stations within Denton, along with Medpark Station; the other three are in Lewisville.
