Columbia High School was originally housed in the former Columbia Female Academy (established 1816) at 1323 Washington Street at the corner with Marion Street. This building was leased to the Richland County Commissioners of Schools in 1884. The school became Columbia's first public high school in 1895 as the Washington Street School.

The Women’s Reception and Evaluation Center, which processes all females entering SCDC, is in the prison. The prison opened in 1973 as "Women's Correctional Institution". It was renamed in 2002 in honor of the first female warden of a maximum-security male prison in South Carolina, Camille Griffin Graham. The current warden is Judy C. Anderson.

Broad River Correctional Institution
Broad River Correctional Institution (BRCI) is a South Carolina Department of Corrections state prison for men located in Columbia, South Carolina. The State of South Carolina execution chamber is located in Broad River. The adjacent Kirkland Correctional Institution lies just to its south side. The prison opened in 1988. In January 1990 the death row inmates were moved from the Central Correctional Institution to Broad River. In 1990 executions began to occur in BRCI.
