Charleroi, Pennsylvania

Charleroi is a borough in Washington County, Pennsylvania, along the Monongahela River, 21 miles south of Pittsburgh. Charleroi was settled in 1890 and incorporated in 1891. The population in 1900 stood at 5,930; in 1910, 9,615; in 1920, 11,516, and in 1940, 10,784. The population was 4,871 at the 2000 census and the 2010 census recorded a population of 4,120. There has been a large-scale cessation of industrial activities in the region.

Donora got its name from a combination of William Donner and Nora Mellon, banker Andrew W. Mellon's wife. Donora's nickname is "The Home of Champions" mainly because of the large number of famous athletes that have called Donora their home.

Monessen, Pennsylvania

Charleroi Locks & Dam

Charleroi Locks & Dam is one of nine navigational structures on the Monongahela River between Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Fairmont, West Virginia. Maintained and built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the gated dam forms an upstream pool that is for 19.7 miles to the Maxwell Lock & Dam. The dam is located at mile 41.5 on the river.
