Under Pennsylvania legal classifications for local governments, Clairton is considered a third-class city. It is home to Clairton Works, the largest coke manufacturing facility in the United States.

Maintained and built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the gated dam forms an upstream pool that is for 23.8 miles, stretching to Charleroi, Pennsylvania. The bridge is located at mile 23.8 of the river; it was modernized during a major reconstruction project in 1979-80.
