Battle of Wilmington
The Battle of Wilmington was fought February 11–22, 1865, during the American Civil War, mostly outside the city of Wilmington, North Carolina. The Union victory in January in the Second Battle of Fort Fisher meant that Wilmington, 30 miles upriver, could no longer be used by the Confederacy as a port. It fell to Union troops after they overcame Confederate defenses along the Cape Fear River south of the city.

Cape Fear (region)
Cape Fear is a coastal plain and tidewater region of North Carolina centered about the city of Wilmington. The region takes its name from the adjacent Cape Fear headland, as does the Cape Fear River which flows through the region and empties into the Atlantic Ocean near the cape. New Hanover High School is a high school located in downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. New Hanover High is the oldest existing high school in Wilmington. The original building, designed by William J. Wilkins and constructed in 1919, underwent a complete renovation at the start of the 21st century. The George Davis Monument
The George Davis Monument in Wilmington, North Carolina was sculpted by Francis Herman Packer a native from Munich, Germany who worked out of New York. Funding for Mr. Packer’s travel to and from Wilmington was provided directly from Mr. James Sprunt. The casting of the monument was done by the Gorham Manufacturing Company in 1910 in Rhode Island. The casting was 8 feet tall bound bronze weighing in at 1,700 pounds.
Cotton Exchange of Wilmington
The Cotton Exchange of Wilmington, North Carolina is a shopping complex consisting of over eight historical buildings dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is so named due to the inclusion of the Old James Sprunt Cotton Exchange building; a business who claimed to be the largest exporter of cotton on the east coast until its dissolution in 1950. The Cotton Exchange is located on what is now North Front Street in downtown Wilmington.

Brunswick River (North Carolina)

Murchison Building
The Murchison Building is an eleven-story brick and marble building in Wilmington, North Carolina, USA. It occupies the corner of Front and Chestnut Street. Sitting on historic waterfront property, the building overlooks the Cotton Exchange and Cape Fear Community College to the north, USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial and Cape Fear to the west, Riverfront Park and Chandlers Wharf to the south and Wilmington Downtown including its Courthouse to the east.
Cameron Art Museum
The Cameron Art Museum, formerly known as St. John’s Museum of Art, was established in 1964 in historic downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. The museum operated successfully in the downtown area for forty years and grew enormously during this time. In 2001 St John’s Museum of Art had outgrown its small downtown gallery space and was relocated to the intersection of Independence and 17th Streets, changing its name to the Cameron Art Museum.
