Southern Pines (Amtrak station)

The Southern Pines Amtrak Station, located in Southern Pines, North Carolina, is served by the passenger train. The street address is 235 Northwest Broad Street, and is located in the heart of historic downtown Southern Pines. The U.S. Open returned to Pinehurst No. 2 for the first time since 1999, when Payne Stewart won his second U.S. Open four months before his death. Payne Stewart won his second U.S. Open and third major championship with a 15-foot par putt on the final hole to defeat Phil Mickelson by one stroke. Stewart would not get a chance to defend his title in 2000 as he died less than five months later in a plane crash.
