Hunting Quarters
Hunting Quarters is the original name for the area of eastern North Carolina in Carteret County currently known as the towns of Sea Level and Atlantic (primarily Atlantic). The region, originally settled by the English in the early 18th century, was named Hunting Quarters because many local Coree Indians originally dwelled there, living on the plentiful game, fish and oysters. Around 1910, the name Atlantic was used to describe the extreme eastern part of the area (beyond Styron's Creek).
Core Sound
The Core Sound is a large and shallow body of water in eastern North Carolina located between the mainland of Carteret County and Core Banks, part of the Outer Banks of North Carolina, located west of the Atlantic Ocean and north of Bogue Sound. Pamlico Sound is located to the north and east.
Atlantic, North Carolina
Atlantic is an unincorporated community in eastern Carteret County situated along the Core Sound, located in what was known to early settlers of the area as Hunting Quarters. It is the location of US 70's eastern terminus and the ferry terminal for journeys to North Core Banks in the Cape Lookout National Seashore. The community is located east of the United States Marine Corps installation MCOLF Atlantic which is primarily used for helicopter and aggressor force exercises.
Drum Inlet
Drum Inlet is an inlet of the Outer Banks in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It connects the Core Sound with the Atlantic Ocean and separates North Core Banks from South Core Banks. Drum Inlet initially opened in about 1899, but closed naturally by 1919. It reopened during the 1933 Outer Banks Hurricane, but closed again by 1971. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers then opened New Drum Inlet about 3 miles to the south. In 1999 Hurricane Dennis reopened Old Drum Inlet, but it has again closed.
