Harlem River
The Harlem River is a navigable tidal strait in New York City, USA that flows 8 miles (13 km) between the Hudson River and the East River, separating the boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx. Part of the current course of the Harlem River is the Harlem River Ship Canal, which runs somewhat south of the former course of the river, isolating a small portion of Manhattan on the Bronx side of the river.
Polo Grounds
The Polo Grounds was the name given to three different stadiums in Upper Manhattan, New York City, used by many professional teams in both baseball and American football from 1880 until 1963. In baseball, the site was home to the New York Metropolitans from 1880 until 1885, the New York Giants from 1883 until 1957, the New York Yankees from 1912 until 1922, and the New York Mets in their first two seasons of 1962 and 1963.
Coogan's Bluff
For the Clint Eastwood movie see Coogan's Bluff (film) Coogan's Bluff is the name of a promontory rising abruptly from the Harlem River in upper Manhattan in New York City. Starting at 155th Street, it is regarded as the boundary between the neighborhoods of Harlem and Washington Heights. The rise is named for James J. Coogan (1845-1915), a real estate owner and one-term Manhattan Borough President. Known as "Coogan's Bluff" as early as 1893, the property passed on to his wife upon his passing.
Rucker Park
Rucker Park is a basketball court in the Harlem neighborhood of the New York City borough of Manhattan. It is located at 155th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard across the street from the former Polo Grounds site. Many who played at the park in the Rucker Tournament achieved a level of fame for their abilities, and several have gone on to play in the NBA.
155th Street (IRT Ninth Avenue Line)
155th Street was an elevated railway station in New York City which was in use from 1870 until 1958, serving as the north terminal of the IRT Ninth Avenue Line from its opening until 1918 and then as the southern terminal of a surviving stub portion from 1940 until its closure in 1958. It has two tracks and one island platform.
155th Street (IND Concourse Line)
155th Street (155th Street – Eighth Avenue on some signage) is a local station on the IND Concourse Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of 155th Street and Eighth Avenue, it is served by the D train at all times except rush hours in peak direction and the B during rush hours only. This underground station, opened on July 1, 1933, has two side platforms and three tracks. The center track is used by the D train during rush hours in peak direction.
Clef Club
The Clef Club was a popular entertainment venue and society for African American musicians in Harlem, achieving its largest success in the 1910s. Incorporated by James Reese Europe in 1910, it was a combination musicians' hangout, fraternity club, labor exchange, and concert hall, across the street from Marshall's Hotel. In its best years, the Clef Club's annual take exceeded $100,000.
Sedgwick Avenue (IRT Ninth Avenue Line)
Sedgwick Avenue was an elevated, ground level and underground station on the Bronx extension of the IRT Ninth Avenue Line. This station was built to connect to the New York & Putnam Railroad passenger trains that terminated there instead of the former 155th Street terminal and New York Central Railroad Hudson Division trains that stopped at the new (1918) platforms at this location. This station remained in use by the Polo Grounds Shuttle until 1958.
Polo Grounds Towers
The Polo Grounds Towers is a housing complex consisting of four thirty-story buildings, located in Harlem, New York City, on the former site of the Polo Grounds. A total of 1,616 apartments are located on the 15.15-acre site, which is bordered by Frederick Douglass Boulevard, West 155th Street and Harlem River Drive. The complex was completed on June 30, 1968, and is run by the New York City Housing Authority.
Sylvan Place
Sylvan Place is the name of several places in New York City. Sylvan Terrace, sometimes known as Sylvan Place, is a historic neighborhood nestled in New York City near Fort Washington consisting of antique rowhouses and cobblestone streets with coachlights leading up to the Morris Jumel Mansion Museum. Sylvan Place is a former small street running from East 120th Street to East 121st Street, between (parallel to) Lexington Avenue and Third Avenue. The street signage still exists.
Bushman Steps
The Bushman steps in New York City are an almost lost artifact from baseball history. Circa 1912, this stairwell took people from the subway to the ticket booths of The Polo Grounds. Just west of Coogan's Bluff in Sugar Hill Harlem or modern day Washington Heights, Manhattan. New York Giants baseball fans would proceed to descend the cliff via the John T. Brush Stairway which is now closed due to neglect. The New York Parks Department does not know who the name Bushman refers to.
Putnam Bridge (New York City)
Putnam Bridge was a swing bridge that spanned the Harlem River and the adjacent tracks of the New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad in New York City, connecting the boroughs of Manhattan and the Bronx near the current location of Yankee Stadium. It carried two tracks of the New York & Putnam Railroad, and later the 9th Avenue elevated line of the IRT, as well as two pedestrian walkways outside the superstructure. The bridge opened to rail and pedestrian traffic on May 1, 1881.
