Abbey of the Genesee
The Abbey of the Genesee is a community of more than two dozen contemplative monks located near Piffard in the town of York, New York. They are a member of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance, commonly known as the Trappists. They were founded from the Abbey of Gethsemani in Bardstown, Kentucky in 1951.
Retsof, New York
Retsof is an unincorporated community within the town of York in Livingston County, New York, United States. The community, situated 26 miles southwest of the city of Rochester, is off rt 63 about a mile east of rt 36 It was founded by a man named Foster who reversed the letters of his name to name the town and was the site of one of the world's largest salt mines until its collapse in 1994. A new mine, the Hampton Corners mine, is located near Mount Morris, about 10 miles to the southeast.
