The South Bronx is an area of the New York City borough of The Bronx, in the U.S. state of New York. The geographic definitions of the South Bronx have evolved and are disputed but certainly include the neighborhoods of Mott Haven and Melrose. The neighborhoods of Tremont, University Heights, Highbridge, Morrisania, Soundview, Hunts Point, Longwood and Castle Hill are sometimes considered part of the South Bronx.

This elevated station opened on November 26, 1904 as part of the IRT Third Avenue Line until the connection to the IRT Lenox Avenue Line opened on July 10, 1905.

Prospect Avenue is a local station on the IRT White Plains Road Line of the New York City Subway. Located at the intersection of Prospect and Westchester Avenues in the Bronx, it is served by the 2 train at all times, and the 5 train at all other times except during late nights and rush hours in the peak direction. This elevated station, opened on November 26, 1904 as part of the IRT Second Avenue Line and renovated in 2006, has three tracks and two side platforms.
Third Avenue – 149th Street (IRT White Plains Road Line)
Third Avenue – 149th Street is a station on the IRT White Plains Road Line of the New York City Subway. It is located at Third Avenue and East 149th Street (also known as Eugenio Maria de Hostos Boulevard) in Mott Haven, Bronx and is served by the 2 and 5 trains, the latter of which does not stop here during late night hours. It is the second busiest station in the Bronx (161st Street – Yankee Stadium has more riders), 48th overall, with 7,525,094 passengers as of 2012.
Longwood, Bronx
Longwood is an urban, mixed use, primarily residential neighborhood geographically located in the southwest Bronx, New York City. The neighborhood is part of Bronx Community Board 2. Its boundaries, starting from the north and moving clockwise are: East 167th Street to the north, the Bronx River & the Bruckner Expressway to east, East 149th Street to the south, and Prospect Avenue to the west. Southern Blvd is the primary thoroughfare through Longwood.
Melrose, Bronx
Melrose is primarily a residential neighborhood geographically located in the southwestern section of the borough of The Bronx in New York City. Predominantly German-American in the 19th century it is home to the Haffen Building and was home to Haffen Brewing Company. The German population waned especially post WWII. The neighborhood until the 60s was mostly Irish and Italian. It is now primarily Latino. It adjoins the business and one-time theater area known as the Hub.

Boricua College is a post-secondary educational institution located in New York City in the United States. The college was designed to serve the educational needs of Puerto Ricans and other Hispanics. The school employs a largely bilingual faculty of 130 full-time and 100 part-time members. It serves a student population of 1,200. The college has four campuses: at Audubon Terrace in Washington Heights, Manhattan; in North Williamsburg, Brooklyn; in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn; and in the Bronx.

The Hub, Bronx
The Hub is at the retail, theater, and restaurant heart of the South Bronx, New York. It is located where four roads converge: East 149th Street, Willis, Melrose and Third Avenue. It is primarily located inside the neighborhood of Melrose but also lines the northern border of Mott Haven. The Hub has been called "the Broadway of the Bronx". It is the site of both maximum traffic and architectural density.
Samuel Gompers High School
Samuel Gompers Career and Technical Education High School was a public vocational school for grades 9–12 located in the Bronx, named for American Federation of Labor founder Samuel Gompers. The school was founded in 1930 as Samuel Gompers Industrial High School for Boys. It was closed in 2012.
149th Street (IRT Third Avenue Line)
149th Street was an express station on the demolished IRT Third Avenue Line, at "The Hub". The station was originally opened on June 16, 1887. It was built three tracks and two island platforms. The next stop to the north was 156th Street. The next stop to the south was 143rd Street. When the line south of here was closed on May 12, 1955, 149th Street station became the southern terminus of the Third Avenue Line.
161st Street (IRT Third Avenue Line)
161st Street was a local station on the demolished IRT Third Avenue Line. It originally opened on August 7, 1887 and had three tracks and two side platforms. The next stop to the north was 166th Street. The next stop to the south was 156th Street. The station closed on April 29, 1973.

Playground 52
Playground 52 is a small park in The Bronx. Originally built in the 1950s as a playground for PS-52, the playground suffered decay during the 1970s. In 1980, a group of volunteers known as 52 People for Progress began to rehabilitate the park. The park is currently owned by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation and is used as a venue for musical performances.

Bronx Opera House
The Bronx Opera House is a theatre built in 1913 at 436 East 149th street in Bronx, New York. It was one of several theaters to come into the area that became known as the Hub. It seated 1,900 on three levels and in box seats. Performers included Will Rogers in 1914, the Marx Brothers, George Burns, Gracie Allen, Julia Marlowe, Ethel Barrymore and Lionel Barrymore, David Warfield. Other performers at the theatre included George M. Cohan, Eddie Cantor, John Bunny, Harry Houdini, and Peggy Wood.
Haffen Building
Haffen Building is a historic landmark constructed in 1901-1902 in the South Bronx, New York City. Built for Matthias Haffen's family, founder of the brewery that grew into Haffen Brewing Company, it is located at 138th Street between Third Avenue and Willis Avenue. The building was designed by architect Michael J. Garvin, a friend of Louis Haffen, and the designer of the Bronx Borough Courthouse.
