As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 820, reflecting a decline of 80 (-8.9%) from the 900 counted in the 2000 Census, which had in turn declined by 10 (-1.1%) from the 910 counted in the 1990 Census. Interlaken was formed as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 11, 1922, from portions of Ocean Township, based on the results of a referendum held on May 3, 1922.

The 856,000-square-foot mall, located at the intersection of Route 35 and Route 66, was originally constructed in 1977 as an indoor mall. It faced stiff competition from the more upscale Monmouth Mall, located five miles (8 km) further north on Route 35.
Deal Test Site
The Deal Test Site is located in Ocean Township, New Jersey. The Joe Palaia Park was originally started as the Foxburst Farm, a 63-acre tract which is now the southern portion of the park. It was purchased by Western Electric,, in 1919. The site was later expanded with an additional 145 acres purchase by AT&T in 1927. The site is bounded by three major township roads, Deal Road, Whalepond Road, and Dow Avenue.
