Jackson State University
Jackson State University (Jackson State, or JSU) is a historically black university in Jackson, Mississippi, United States. Founded in 1877 in Natchez, Mississippi by the American Baptist Home Mission Society of New York, the Society moved the school to Jackson in 1882, renaming it Jackson College, and developed its present campus in 1902. It became a state-supported public institution in 1940.

Battle of Jackson, Mississippi
The Battle of Jackson, fought on May 14, 1863, in Jackson, Mississippi, was part of the Vicksburg Campaign in the American Civil War. Union commander Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant and the Army of the Tennessee defeated Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston, seizing the city, cutting supply lines, and opening the path to the west and the Siege of Vicksburg.

WXMS-LP (channel 27) is a television station in Jackson, Mississippi affiliated with Me-TV. The station began broadcasting in December 1999 as an affiliate of both the WB and UPN networks. The WB was WXMS's primary affiliation while UPN was its secondary affiliation. On October 7, 2001, WXMS became a primary UPN affiliate after ceding its WB affiliation to sister station WDBD, which had defected from the Fox network.

Carroll Gartin
Carrol Gartin (September 14, 1913 – December 19, 1966) was an American Democratic politician from Laurel in Jones County in southeastern Mississippi, who served three terms as the 22nd lieutenant governor of his state. He was born in Meridian, Mississippi in 1913. He served his first term from 1952 to 1960 under fellow Democrats, Governors Hugh L. White and James P. Coleman. He returned to the office for two years under Paul B. Johnson, Jr. , but died midway in the term.

1979 Easter flood
The 1979 Easter flood was among the most costly and devastating ever to occur in Mississippi, with $500 million in damages. This is equivalent to $ billion in present day terms. It was the result of the Pearl River being overwhelmed by severe rain upstream. Floodwaters sent the Pearl 15 feet above flood stage. More than 17,000 people in the cities of Jackson, Flowood, Pearl, Richland and other communities were forced from their homes.

The center opened in 1969 with more than 330,000 square feet of retail space on the rapidly developing U.S. Highway 51, today known as Terry Road, and frontage road of Interstate 55. Opened in 2006, the facility has a capacity of 800 spectators.
