Port Gibson is a city in Claiborne County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Claiborne County.
Battle of Port Gibson
The Battle of Port Gibson was fought near Port Gibson, Mississippi, on May 1, 1863, between Union and Confederate forces during the Vicksburg Campaign of the American Civil War. The Union Army was led by Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, and they were victorious.
Gemiluth Chessed (Port Gibson, Mississippi)
Gemiluth Chessed (Acts of Loving Kindness) is a Moorish Revival synagogue in Port Gibson, Mississippi. It is the oldest surviving synagogue in the state and the only building of this architectural style. It was built in 1892 by a community of Jewish immigrants from German states and Alsace-Lorraine. Due to declining population, the congregation closed in 1986.
Chamberlain-Hunt Academy
Chamberlain-Hunt Academy is one of the oldest college preparatory schools in the South. Founded in 1830 as Oakland College near Rodney and Lorman the institution was closed during the Civil War but refounded as "Chamberlain-Hunt Academy" in 1879, this time in historic Port Gibson, Mississippi. The school was reorganized under new ownership in 1996. The campus, with its buildings in brick Georgian Revival style, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
