Osceola Township, Houghton County, Michigan
Osceola Township is a civil township of Houghton County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,908 at the 2000 census.
Keweenaw Waterway
The Keweenaw Waterway is a partly natural, partly artificial waterway which cuts across the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan; it separates Copper Island from the mainland. Parts of the waterway are variously known as the Keweenaw Waterway, Portage Canal, Portage Lake Canal, Portage River, Lily Pond, Torch Lake, and Portage Lake.
MacInnes Student Ice Arena
John J. MacInnes Student Ice Arena is a 4,200-capacity hockey arena in Houghton, Michigan. It is home to the Michigan Tech Huskies men's ice hockey team. It is named for John J. MacInnes, head coach of the Huskies from 1956 to 1983, who was one of the most successful coaches in the history of college hockey with a record of 555-295-39. In addition to hockey, the arena is used for Spring Commencement ceremonies.
WMTU-FM
WMTU-FM 91.9 is the student-run campus radio station at Michigan Technological University. It is located in the basement of Wadsworth Hall in Houghton, Michigan, and operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Staff is constituted of a volunteer general staff featuring a general manager and six different departments as well as the air staff. Open DJ signups are held the first Wednesday and Thursday of each semester, including the summer tracks.
Memorial Union Building (MTU)
The Memorial Union Building (MUB) was finished on the Michigan Tech campus in 1952. Originally constructed to facilitate the needs of 1169 students, the MUB was renovated in 1987 to accommodate the large increase in enrollment. Used for many things including lounge and study purposes, cafeteria, dining rooms, food services, bookstore, conference rooms, student organization offices, and game rooms, the MUB is always a center of social activity for the Michigan Tech campus.
Pilgrim River
The Pilgrim River is a 12.9-mile-long river in Portage Township, Houghton County, Michigan, in the United States. The river flows near the Portage Lake Golf Course and empties into the Keweenaw Waterway, which connects to Lake Superior. In 2010, the Pilgrim River Watershed Project formed with the goal to secure easements along the river to keep the river accessible for non-motorized recreation. The protected area comprises 1,382 acres of mature forestlands encompassing over 3 miles of the river.
Arcadian mine
Arcadian mine was a copper mine developed in 1898 near Paavola, (then called Arcadia) in Franklin Township, a short distance east of Hancock, in Houghton County, Michigan. The initial public offering was managed by Boston financier Thomas W. Lawson. The mine was owned and managed by Arcadian Copper Company in which some Standard Oil directors had a significant interest. Although there was a significant amount of investment in the mine, it was not rich in copper.
Copper Country Humane Society
The Copper Country Humane Society (CCHS) is a non-profit humane society located in Houghton, Michigan, USA. It is not part of any state or national organization. It serves Keweenaw, Baraga, and Houghton Counties. The mission of the humane society is to be a no-kill shelter and not set a "time limit" for any animal. The shelter averages 70-75 cats and 10-15 dogs at any given time. CCHS was founded in 1972.
