Assonet River
The Assonet River is located in Bristol County, Massachusetts. It flows 7.4 miles in a westerly direction through Freetown and joins the Taunton River near Assonet Neck in Berkley, Massachusetts.
WPEP
WPEP was an AM radio station operating on a frequency of 1570 kHz from Taunton, Massachusetts. WPEP's format had been full-service, offering local news and talk programming, as well as music and nationally syndicated talk. The station is owned by Anastos Media Group.
Freetown Elementary School
Freetown Elementary School opened in 1950 and serves grammar school students from the town of Freetown, Massachusetts. It educates around 546 students in grades PK-4 as part of the Freetown & Lakeville Public Schools. As of the 2005-06 school year, the school had an enrollment of 542 students and 34.7 classroom teachers (on an FTE basis), for a student-teacher ratio of 15.6. 96% of students are Caucasian. The school has a chorus that performs in an annual Winter Holiday Concert in December.
Profile Rock
Profile Rock, also known as the Old Man of Joshua's Mountain, is a 50-foot high granite rock formation located in Freetown, Massachusetts just outside Assonet village and near the Freetown State Forest. Native Americans believe it to be the image of the Wampanoag Chief, Massasoit. The Wampanoags occupied the region of present-day Rhode Island and Massachusetts bounded by Narragansett Bay to the west and the Atlantic Ocean to the east.
Assonet Burying Ground
The Assonet Burying Ground is the main public cemetery for Freetown, Massachusetts. Prior to becoming a cemetery, the land occupied by the Assonet Burying Ground was used as a military musterfield for the southeastern Massachusetts area. The cemetery is 25 acres, the first 13 acres having been acquired by the town from Benedict and Thomas Andros in 1864, despite burials dating back to the late 18th century. The remaining 12 acres were acquired from the heirs of Wallace T. Reynolds in 1956.
