Poolesville, Maryland

Poolesville is a town in the western portion of Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. The population was 4,883 at the 2010 census. It is surrounded by (but is technically not part of) the Montgomery County Agricultural Reserve, and is considered a distant bedroom community for commuters to Washington, D.C. The name of the town comes from the brothers John Poole, Sr. and Joseph Poole, Sr. who owned land in what is now Poolesville.

White's Ford

White's Ford was an important ford over the Potomac River during the American Civil War. It was used in many major actions, including the crossing into Maryland of the Confederate army prior to the Maryland Campaign and Confederate Major General J.E.B. Stuart's ride around Union Major General George B. McClellan on October 10, 1862, when he used the ford to cross into Loudoun County, Virginia. It is located a few miles above present-day White's Ferry. The ford was named after Captain Elijah V.

Little Monocacy River

The Little Monocacy River is a 10.1-mile-long tributary stream of the Potomac River. Despite its name, the stream does not feed into the Monocacy River. The Little Monocacy is located almost entirely in Montgomery County, Maryland, and enters the Potomac just downstream from where the Monocacy enters the Potomac. Its headwaters rise southwest of Comus, and most of its approximately 17-square-mile watershed is farmland and pasture (60.56%) or forested land (36.03%).

Monocacy Aqueduct

The Monocacy Aqueduct — or C&O Canal Aqueduct No. 2 — is the largest aqueduct on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, crossing the Monocacy River just before it empties into the Potomac River in Frederick County, Maryland, USA. Its seven graceful arches make it arguably the most beautiful structure on the C&O Canal. The 438 foot (133.5 m) aqueduct was built by three separate contractors between 1829 and 1833 at the cost of US$127,900.

Gordon Strong Automobile Objective

The Gordon Strong Automobile Objective was a proposed planetarium, restaurant, and scenic overlook designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright for the top of Sugarloaf Mountain in Maryland. The National Conference Center (NCC) is a corporate training facility in Leesburg, Virginia. It hosts over 14,000 individuals per month and comprises 265,000 square feet of meeting space, one of the largest in the region. The center contains 250 conference rooms, an athletic facility, and 917 guest rooms. The building was built in 1974 as the Xerox Conference Center at a cost of $55 million dollars. Dickerson Whitewater Course

The Dickerson Whitewater Course, on the Potomac River near Dickerson Maryland, was built for use by canoe and kayak paddlers training for the 1992 Olympic Games in Spain. It was the first pump-powered artificial whitewater course built in North America, and is still the only one anywhere with heated water. It remains an active training center for whitewater slalom racing, swiftwater rescue training, and other whitewater activities. The facility is owned by the NRG Energy company.

Darby Store

The Darby Store is a historic site located in Beallsville, Maryland. Originally, a store and blacksmith shop were at the location of the Darby Store, the intersection of Beallsville Road and Darnstown Road (Route 28), until in 1908 H.C. Darby bought the land. In 1910, H.C. Darby built a two-story general store. In the 19th and 20th century it was very common to have the family residence next to the family business.

Selden Island

Selden Island is a 408-acre island in the Potomac River, located about 32 km WNW of Washington, DC. It is about 4 km long and 0.4–0.5 km wide (2.5 x 1/4–1/3 miles). Although it is located within Montgomery County, Maryland, the only road access is via a bridge connecting it to the Loudoun County, Virginia side of the river. Archaeological evidence indicates the island has been a site of human activity since the Early Woodland period, around 1000 BCE.
