Fryeburg (CDP), Maine
Fryeburg is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Fryeburg in Oxford County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,549 at the 2000 census.
Fryeburg Academy
Fryeburg Academy, founded 1792, is one of the oldest private schools in the United States. It is located in Fryeburg, Maine. One of the first headmasters was Daniel Webster, who taught at the school for a year. Boarding students come from across the United States, North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The Academy also serves as the high school for the MSAD 72 school district.
Battle of Pequawket
The Battle of Pequawket (also known as Lovewell's Fight) occurred on May 9, 1725 (O.S. ), during Father Rale's War in northern New England. Ranger Captain John Lovewell led the New England troops, and Chief Paugus led the Abenaki at Pequawket, the site of present-day Fryeburg, Maine. The battle was related to the expansion of New England settlements along the Kennebec River. The battle marked the end of hostilities between the English and the western Wabanakis of Maine.
Lovewell Pond
Lovewell Pond is a sizable body of water located in southeastern Fryeburg, Maine. It has a moderately developed shoreline with approximately 75-80 buildings, not including approximately 35 others with access rights to the pond's shoreline. Lovewell Pond is the second largest pond in Oxford County. It is about 1,120 acres, slightly smaller than Kezar Pond, which is about 1,299 acres . Lovewell Pond does, however, fluctuate largely in size due to its annual flooding phenomenon.
