Peaks Island is the most populous island in Casco Bay, Maine. It is part of the city of Portland and is approximately 3 miles from downtown. The island became a popular summer destination in the late 19th century, when it was known as the Coney Island of Maine, home to hotels, cottages, theaters, and amusement parks. While small, the island hosts a variety of flourishing businesses that are rapidly expanding and growing.
Little Diamond Island, Maine
Little Diamond Island (previously Little Hog Island) is an island in Casco Bay Maine. It is part of the city of Portland, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the island had a year-round population of 5. Most of the island is private property. It is served by the Casco Bay Lines ferry service. At low tide, Little Diamond Island connects to Great Diamond via a semi-submerged sandbar. This is how the City of Portland is capable of picking up the trash on both islands.
Cushing Island, Maine
Cushing Island, or Cushing's Island, is a privately owned island in Casco Bay in the U.S. state of Maine. Part of the city of Portland, Maine, roughly 45 families live there seasonally. In 1623-24 English explorer Christopher Levett built a blockhouse on the island, part of 6,000 acres granted him by the English King. Levett left behind a group of settlers to carry on after he returned to England. But the naval captain and adventurer never returned, and the fate of the men is unknown.

Fort Levett
Fort Levett was a former U.S. Army fort built on Cushing Island, Maine, in 1898. Located in Cumberland County, Maine, in the middle of Casco Bay near Portland, Maine, the fort was heavily fortified with cannons for coastal defense. Built in the wake of the Spanish American War, Fort Levett was manned during both World Wars. Fort Levett was built on 140 acres of Cushing Island, and the coast artillery fortification was visited by several Secretaries of War, including Jacob M.
Annie C. Maguire
Annie C. Maguire was a British three-masted bark, sailing from Buenos Aires on 24 December 1886, when she struck the ledge at Portland Head Light, Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Lighthouse Keeper Joshua Strout, his son, wife, and volunteers rigged an ordinary ladder as a gangplank between the shore and the ledge the ship was heeled against. Captain O'Neil, the ship's master, his wife, two mates and the nine-man crew clambered onto the ledge and then, one by one, crossed the ladder to safety.
