Freeport, Illinois

Freeport is the county seat and largest city of Stephenson County, Illinois. The population was 25,638 at the 2010 census, and the mayor of Freeport is George Gaulrapp, elected in 2005. Freeport is known for hosting the second Lincoln-Douglas debate of 1858, and as "Pretzel City, USA", named after the heritage of its Germanic settlers in the 1850s, as well as the pretzel company that started as a result of their arrival. The high school's mascot is the Pretzel to honor this unique heritage.

WFRL 1570 AM is a radio station licensed to Freeport, Illinois. WFRL airs a 1960's and 70's Oldies format and is owned by Big Radio. The station also features local and ABC radio network news, plus farm and local high school sports programming. Special weekend programs include American Top 40-The 70's, The Charlie Tuna 70's show, and a Saturday evening 1955-1963 music program called "Before The Beatles". Freeport is a proposed Amtrak station in Freeport, Illinois. The station will serve a new Chicago-Rockford-Dubuque Amtrak route that is expected to begin operation in late 2014 or early 2015. The station's construction largely involves the renovation of the Rawleigh building, which is part of an abandoned factory complex in downtown Freeport, as well as adding on to the complex accordingly to make it suitable for use as a train station.
