Steven Kazmierczak shot multiple people on the campus of Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois, killing five people and injuring another twenty-one, before committing suicide. The incident happened at the campus's Cole Hall at approximately 3:05 p.m. local time.

Originally measured at a magnitude 4.3 and a depth of 3.1 miles, the earthquake's epicenter was about 43 miles west-northwest of Chicago, 2 miles east-northeast of the village of Virgil in Kane County, and 2.5 miles northwest of the village of Lily Lake, also in Kane County, at a depth of 6.2 miles .
