Hillsborough County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. Its 2010 population was 1,229,226. Its county seat and largest city is Tampa. Hillsborough, together with Pinellas, Pasco and Hernando counties comprise the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area, and along with various combinations of Manatee and Sarasota counties to the south, Citrus County to the north, and Polk County to the east is often referred to as the Tampa Bay Area.

Tampa Bypass Canal

The Tampa Bypass Canal and Palm River are a 14-mile-long flood bypass operated by the Southwest Florida Water Management District. The canal includes several concrete flood control structures and was constructed during the 1960s and 1970s. Its purpose is to redirect flood waters from large amounts of rainfall from the Hillsborough River to Tampa Bay to prevent floodwaters reaching homes and businesses.
