Because the area has many horse ranches and is located in the southwestern part of Broward County, residents chose "Southwest Ranches" over many other potential town names.
Flamingo Gardens
Flamingo Gardens is a 60-acre, not-for-profit wildlife sanctuary, aviary, and botanical garden located just west of Fort Lauderdale, Florida at 3750 South Flamingo Road, USA. It is open to the public for a fee. The grounds contain more than 3,000 species of tropical and subtropical plants, including orchids, ferns, bromeliads, 200-year-old oaks, and 300 plus species of palms. A narrated tram ride leads through the site's tropical rainforest, native hammock, wetland areas and groves.
Fox Observatory
Fox Observatory is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by South Florida Amateur Astronomers Association. It is located in Sunrise, Florida (USA). In the late 1960s, Dr. Joseph Dennison Fox, Professor of Astronomy and History, completed his tenure at the University of Puerto Rico, and with his wife Sylvia, retired to North Miami. He brought with him an optical tube assembly for a 6-inch f/15 refractor.

Plantation High School

Pioneer City
Pioneer City was an Old West theme park located across the street from Flamingo Gardens in Davie, Florida. The park was opened on Memorial Day weekend 1966 by photography studio magnate Myron M. "Mike" Weiss, Sr. as a built-to-scale Dodge City, Kansas, complete with a saloon, general store, Pony Express office, opera house and casino, undertaker, and barber shop, highlighted by cowboy actors who staged gunfights at high noon.

The Mall was owned and managed by the Mills Corporation, also owner of the nearby Sawgrass Mills mall, from 2003 until Simon Property Group acquired The Mills in 2007.

Plantation Towne Mall
The Plantation Towne Mall was an enclosed shopping mall in Plantation, Florida, which was destroyed by a fire on September 6, 1996, that had quickly consumed the structure. The shopping mall originally opened in 1968 as an open-air shopping plaza with a Publix Supermarket on its west end, and a Rite Aid Drug Store (vacant space during the fire) and movie theater (called Towne Theatre, but later Art Towne Twin until closing) on its east.
