Stony Creek (Branford)
Stony Creek is a section of Branford, Connecticut which has three unique attractions: the Thimble Islands, the Stony Creek Puppet House, and the Stony Creek Museum.
Stony Creek Puppet House
The Stony Creek Puppet House is a puppet theater on the shoreline of the Stony Creek section of Branford, Connecticut, near New Haven, a stone's throw away from the famed Thimble Islands. The Stony Creek Puppet House was originally built in 1903 as a silent Movie Theater called “The Lyric Theater". In 1920, The Parish Players, a Stony Creek Community Theater group purchased the building and opened it as The Stony Creek Theater.
Bear Island (Connecticut)
Bear Island is one of the Thimble Islands off Stony Creek, a section of Branford, Connecticut, USA. It is the site to a former granite quarry, which exported high-quality pink granite to such constructions as the Lincoln Memorial, Grant's Tomb and the base of the Statue of Liberty. The famous Stony Creek granite is still quarried in Stony Creek.
Money Island (Branford, Connecticut)
Money Island is one of the Thimble Islands off Stony Creek, a section of Branford, Connecticut. It is named after a legend that Captain Kidd buried his treasure there. The island, which 12 acres (49,000 m²) in size, bears an entire village of 32 houses. At this time, none of the houses are occupied year-round.
Governor Island (Connecticut)
Governor Island is one of the Thimble Islands off Stony Creek, a section of Branford, Connecticut. It has 14 residences, although none are inhabited year-round. Inhabited initially as an oyster company's base of operations. Since pigs will feed from an oyster shucker's waste pile, a "watch pig" was installed rather than a dog, eliminating the daily row out to feed the animal. The assertiveness of this pig quickly earned it the name "Governor".
Davis Island (Connecticut)
Davis Island, one of the Thimble Islands off Stony Creek, a section of Branford, Connecticut, was the site of President William Howard Taft's "Summer White House".
Sachem's Head Yacht Club
The Sachem's Head Yacht Club is a private yacht club located on the shore of Long Island Sound in Guilford, Connecticut near the Thimble Islands. It serves an active racing fleet and is a summer base for member families and juniors involved in sailing, swimming and tennis. The club was founded in 1896. A panoramic view of the clubhouse taken from the peninsula:
Thimble Islands
The Thimble Islands is an archipelago consisting of small islands in Long Island Sound, located in and around the harbor of Stony Creek in the southeast corner of Branford, Connecticut. The archipelago of islands made up of Stony Creek pink granite bedrock were once the tops of hills prior to the last ice age. As a result, the Thimble Islands are much more stable than most other islands in Long Island Sound, which are terminal moraines of rubble deposited by retreating glaciers.
