Whittier is a city in Los Angeles County, California about 12 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Golden West Airlines Flight 261
Golden West Airlines, Flight 261, a De Havilland Twin Otter DHC-6, collided with a Cessna 150 (N11421), owned by CessnAir Aviation, Inc. , near Whittier, California. The accident occurred on January 9, 1975 at approximately 4:07 p.m. PST, while the Sun was just 9 degrees above the western horizon, directly into the eyes of the pilots of GW flight 261. Both aircraft were destroyed by the collision and subsequent ground impact.
Fred C. Nelles Youth Correctional Facility
Until 2004, the Fred C. Nelles Youth Correctional Facility was in essence a prison for youth located on Whittier Boulevard, in Whittier, California. Operated by the California Youth Authority, now part of California Department of Corrections, it once quartered young people, who had gotten in trouble with the law, until it was closed by the state of CA in June, 2004.
Omega Chemical Corporation
The Omega Chemical Corporation was a refrigerant and solvent recycling company that operated from 1976-1991 in Whittier, California. Due to improper waste handling and removal, the soil and groundwater beneath the property became contaminated and the area is now referred to as the Omega Chemical Superfund Site. Cleanup of the site began in 1995 with the removal of hazardous waste receptacles and a multimillion dollar soil vaporization detoxifying system.
The Quad at Whittier
The Quad at Whittier is a shopping mall in Whittier, California. It was built in 1953 an expanded in 1965 with the addition of a May Company California department store. Hinshaw's and F. C. Nash were other major tenants. After the center destroyed by an earthquake in 1987, its owners began renovating it as a strip mall. Hinshaw's, the only store not affected by the earthquake, closed in 1992.
