Derby Acres is a census-designated place (CDP) in Kern County, California, United States. Derby Acres is located 5.5 miles north-northwest of Fellows, at an elevation of 1375 feet (419 m). The population was 322 at the 2010 census, down from 376 at the 2000 census. The town is on State Route 33 at the northern extremity of the Midway-Sunset Oil Field, about five miles (8 km) southeast of McKittrick.

Fellows is surrounded on all sides by the enormous Midway-Sunset Oil Field, the third-largest oil field in the United States, and the oil and gas industry accounts for much of the area's economic activity.

State Route 119 passes east of town from its junction with SR 33 to the south.

Lakeview Gusher
Lakeview Gusher Number One was an immense out-of-control pressurized oil well in the Midway-Sunset Oil Field in Kern County, California. It created the largest accidental oil spill in history, lasting 18 months and releasing 9 million barrels of crude oil. Midway-Sunset was one of the largest oil reserves in America. When drilling commenced, the Lakeview Oil Company expected natural gas and a small amount of oil. Instead, there was a large blowout which overloaded storage tanks.

KBDS is a radio station licensed to serve Taft, California. The station is owned by Radio Campensina Bakersfield, Inc. , which is itself owned by the United Farm Workers. While the station normally broadcasts to the Kern County, California, area, as of November 14, 2008, it is temporarily off the air. Before the station was silenced on November 14, 2008, it broadcast a Rhythmic Top 40 music format. Branded as "Play 103.9", the station's slogan was "Blazin' Hip Hop Y Mas."

Taft Union High School
Taft Union High School is located in Taft in Kern County, California, in the United States. Taft High was founded in 1912. Taft is a small city and the school also serves the surrounding rural area, with a total population of about 20,000. The school was featured in the movie "The Best of Times" with Robin Williams and Kurt Russell. Taft was also in the 1996 movie For My Daughter's Honor, with the name changed to Tate Union High School. Parts of the movie Frog-g-g! were filmed at TUHS as well.
Midway-Sunset Oil Field
The Midway-Sunset Oil Field is a large oil field in Kern County, San Joaquin Valley, California in the United States. It is the largest in California and the third largest in the United States. The field was discovered in 1894, and through the end of 2006 had produced close to 3 billion barrels of oil. At the end of 2008 its estimated reserves amounted to approximately 532 million barrels .
Elk Hills Oil Field
The Elk Hills Oil Field (formerly the Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1) is a large oil field in northwestern Kern County, in the Elk Hills of the San Joaquin Valley, California in the United States, about twenty miles (32 km) west of Bakersfield. Discovered in 1911, and having a cumulative production of close to 1.3 billion barrels of oil at the end of 2006, it is the fifth-largest oil field in California, and the seventh-most productive field in the United States.
Buena Vista Oil Field
The Buena Vista Oil Field, formerly the Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 2 (NPR-2) is a large oil field in Kern County, San Joaquin Valley, California in the United States. Discovered in 1909, and having a cumulative production of approximately 667 million barrels, it is the tenth-largest oil field in California. It is also one of the closest to being exhausted, having a total reserve of only about one percent of its original oil, and having produced a mere 713,000 barrels in 2006.

Buena Vista Golf Course
Buena Vista Golf Course is an 18-hole public golf course in Kern County, California. It is located near Dustin Acres, approximately 20 miles west of Bakersfield. It is one of three courses owned and managed by the County of Kern Parks & Recreation Division. The course is 6,710 yards on hilly terrain, designed by George Mifflin. It opened in 1951. The course has views of the Buena Vista Aquatic Recreation Area (which consist of two artificial lakes), farmland, and mountains.
McKittrick Tar Pits
The McKittrick Tar Pits (also McKittrick Oil Seeps and McKittrick Brea Pits) are a series of natural asphalt lakes situated in the western part of Kern County in southern California. The pits are the most extensive asphalt lakes in the state.

Buena Vista Slough
Buena Vista Slough was the joint outlet of an overflowing Buena Vista Lake and a distributary of the Kern River into Tulare Lake. It is now diverted into a system of canals by the Outlet Canal In times when Buena Vista Lake overflowed it first backed up into Kern Lake making one large lake. When this larger lake overflowed it flowed out through the Buena Vista Slough that began southeast of what is now Tupman where it met the Kern River distributary channel.
