Corndon Hill
Corndon Hill is a hill in Powys, Mid Wales, whose summit rises to 513 m above sea level. It is surrounded on three sides by the English county of Shropshire and forms a prominent landmark in the Wales-England border. Corndon's prominent western edge appears to form a separate hill and is known locally as Lan Fawr . The Bronze Age stone circles of Mitchell's Fold and the now largely destroyed The Whetstones lie at the foot of the hill within Shropshire.
Heath Mynd
Heath Mynd is a hill in the English county of Shropshire. It is fairly unnotable except for its Marilyn status, a feature caused by the sharp drop on all sides. It is connected to Corndon Hill by a low col, and is only just inside England, being just one mile from the border with Wales. The nearby village is Norbury; nearest towns are Bishop's Castle and Church Stretton. Its nearest neighbour (visible in the photo) is called Cefn Gunthly.
Mitchell's Fold
Mitchell's Fold (sometimes called Medgel's Fold or Madges Pinfold) is a Bronze Age stone circle in South-West Shropshire, located near the small village of White Grit on dry heathland at the south-west end of Stapeley Hill in the civil parish of Chirbury with Brompton, at a height of 1083 ft (330m) o.d. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (number 107448) in the guardianship of English Heritage.
River Onny
The River Onny is a river in Shropshire, England. It is a major tributary of the River Teme. The river has its sources in the Shropshire Hills at White Grit, located in Mid and South-west Shropshire. It has two branches, the East Onny and West Onny, which converge at Eaton, to the east of Lydham. The River Onny then flows in a South-easterly direction, through Craven Arms and Onibury, before it finally has its confluence with the River Teme just upstream of Ludlow at Bromfield.
Roundton Hill
Roundton Hill is a rounded, steep sided, 370 metres hill, volcanic in origin, in the easternmost part of old Montgomeryshire, Wales, which juts into the English border near Church Stoke. It is managed as a nature reserve by the Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust, who acquired it in 1985. There was once an Iron Age hillfort here. The vantage point offers views across the surrounding countryside. Lead and barite mines run into the hill, and are today used as a roost by Horseshoe and Daubenton's bats.
White Grit
White Grit is a small, scattered village beneath Corndon Hill in Powys, Wales, directly on the border with (and partly in) Shropshire. The nearby village of Priest Weston, despite being in England, actually lies to the west of White Grit. To the east is the A488 road. The nearest town is Bishop's Castle. A former mining village, it took its unusual name from the White Grit (or West Grit) Mine, lead having been mined intermittently in the area since mediaeval times.
Whetstones (stone circle)
The Whetstones are, or were, a stone circle beneath Corndon Hill on the border of Powys, Wales and Shropshire, England. They lie immediately to the west of the village of White Grit and close to Priestweston. The site is also a short distance from the better-known Hoarstones and Mitchell's Fold circles. The circle was largely destroyed in the 19th century, and only a few fragments now remain.
Snead, Powys
Snead is a small village in Powys, Wales. It is situated on the A489 road and the River Camlad. The English border is immediately to the east of the village. The small town of Bishop's Castle is 2.0 miles to the south. A monastery existed here c. 1200, before moving to Chirbury by 1227.
