St Thomas, Swansea
St Thomas is a suburban district and community in Swansea, Wales. It is a mainly residential area which lies east of Swansea city centre across the River Tawe and falls within the St Thomas ward. The southern boundary is formed by the Fabian Way. The area is the birthplace of singer Harry Secombe. Local amenities in the area include the recently built St Thomas Community Primary school which also incorporates the old Margaret Street Nursery school, Community Centre and local library. St.
Port Tennant
Port Tennant is a suburban district of Swansea, Wales, falling within the St. Thomas ward. Port Tennant lies at the southern foot of Kilvey Hill just east of St. Thomas and is bounded by the Fabian Way to the south. It is a mostly residential area. The area takes its name from the Tennant family who developed the Tennant Canal and were responsible for developing the area. The Tennant Canal terminates at the Vale of Neath Inn (now closed) in the south east of Port Tennant.
Kilvey Hill
Kilvey Hill is a hill in South Wales, to the east of Swansea. Kilvey Hill is 193 metres high and is classed as a Sub Marilyn. The top of Kilvey Hill enjoys panoramic views of Swansea city centre, Swansea Docks, Swansea Bay, the Lower Swansea Valley, Bon-y-maen, Neath and Port Talbot. Cilfai was a commote of Gower. There are a number of residential areas dotted around the base of the hill. To the north are Bon-y-maen and Pentrechwyth. To the south are Dan-y-graig, Port Tennant and St. Thomas.
Swansea docks
Swansea Docks is the collective name for several docks in Swansea, Wales. The Swansea docks are located immediately south east of Swansea city centre. In the mid-19th century the port was exporting 60% of the world's copper from factories situated in the Tawe valley.
Swansea Barrage
The Swansea barrage (or the Tawe barrage) was completed in 1992 creating a new marina at the mouth of the River Tawe extending the leisure boat facilities already being offered by the old South Dock. The barrage structure includes a boat lock, spillway, fish pass and generator turbine. The turbine serves a dual use: acting as a power generator for the National Grid as well as being used to pump water back into the Tawe river system.
Nation Hits
Nation Hits (formerly Nation 80s) is an Independent Local Radio station broadcasting to South West Wales. The station originally launched as Swansea Bay Radio on 5 November 2006 with a soft Adult Contemporary and easy listening music format, before switching to playing only 1980s music in March 2012. The station was rebranded as Nation 80s on 1 June 2012. The station has since rebranded again and is now known as Nation Hits, as of 16 January 2013.
Kilvey Community Woodland
The Kilvey Community Woodland is a designated nature reserve in Britain. It is located near the city of Swansea in south Wales. The park is managed by the Forestry Commission and the local council. It is a young woodland and a refuge for wildlife incorporating a variety of habitats including woodland, heathland, wetland and meadow. The area covers the slopes of Kilvey Hill and some of the flat land to the northwest.
St. Thomas (electoral ward)
St. Thomas is the name of an electoral ward and a community of Swansea, Wales. The electoral ward of St. Thomas consists of the following areas: Dan-y-graig, Port Tennant, SA1 Swansea Waterfront, St. Thomas, Swansea Docks, Kilvey Hill and the Grenfell Park Area, in the parliamentary constituency of Swansea East. The ward is bounded by Neath Port Talbot to the east; Swansea Bay to the south; Bonymaen to the north; and Castle and Landore to the east.
Norwegian Church, Swansea
The Norwegian Church is a Grade II listed building in the docklands area of Swansea. The church building was originally located at Newport Docks. The building consists of a Seaman’s Mission to the west end and a single gothic church to the east end. It was originally built as a place of worship for Norwegian sailors when they visited the UK. It was relocated to Swansea in 1910 at a site directly opposite the Sainsbury's supermarket on the River Tawe.
SA1 Swansea Waterfront
SA1 Swansea Waterfront is the marketing name given to the brownfield development area located in northern part of Swansea Docks. The area is located directly to the southeast of Swansea city centre. It is bordered by the Fabian Way to the north and covers the Prince of Wales Dock area. The development will be a commercial and residential mix.
Kilvey Hill transmitting station
The Kilvey Hill transmitting station was originally built by the BBC in 1967 as a relay for VHF and UHF television. VHF television came on air a few months before the UHF services. As built, the station did not radiate VHF FM radio, this was added later. Currently, the hill's transmitters cater for the entire network of digital terrestrial and digital radio subscribers in the city and county of Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and possibly even further.
