Dolaucothi Gold Mines
The Dolaucothi Gold Mines, also known as the Ogofau Gold Mine, are Roman surface and underground mines located in the valley of the River Cothi, near Pumsaint, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The gold mines are located within the Dolaucothi Estate which is now owned by the National Trust. They are the only mines for Welsh gold outside those of the Dolgellau gold-belt, and are a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
Pumsaint
Pumsaint is a village in Carmarthenshire, Wales situated half way between Llanwrda and Lampeter on the A482 in the valley of the River Cothi. It forms part of the extensive estate of Dolaucothi which is owned by the National Trust. Its name means Five Saints derived from the Welsh Pum(p) meaning Five and Saint meaning Saint. The name is derived from the stone block at the nearby gold mines, opposite Ogofau Lodge, which has four sides, each of which has hollows probably caused by pestle impacts.
Caio, Carmarthenshire
Caio or Caeo is a village in the county of Carmarthenshire, south-west Wales, sited near to the Dolaucothi Gold Mines.
Luentinum
Luentinum was a fort and mining settlement in the Roman province of Britannia. It was associated with the Dolaucothi Gold Mines and its remains lie beneath the adjoining village of Pumsaint in the Welsh county of Carmarthenshire. It lay between similar forts at Llandovery and Bremia near Llanio, and some distance away from the fort at Llandeilo. The Roman road Sarn Helen linked Luentinum with Llanio and Llandovery.

The Afon Annell flows through the village, a tributary of the Afon Cothi which it joins further south near Llansawel. Children from the village attend nearby Welsh language primary school, Ysgol Gynradd Caio.
Afon Twrch, Carmarthenshire
Not to be confused with the Afon Twrch which is a tributary of the River Tawe in South Wales or the Afon Twrch which is a tributary of the River Dee in North Wales. The Afon Twrch is a short river in Carmarthenshire, West Wales. It joins the River Cothi (itself a left-bank tributary of the River Towy) at the village of Pumsaint, near to which are the Roman gold mines of Dolaucothi.
Dolaucothi Estate
The Dolaucothi Estate, or as it was often later spelt, Dolaucothy Estate is situated about one mile north-west of the village of Caio in the upper reaches of the picturesque Cothi valley in the parish of Cynwyl Gaeo, Carmarthenshire. The name Dolaucothi means ‘the meadows of the Cothi’ and the now demolished mansion house of the Johnes family stood close by to the banks of the fast flowing River Cothi. In 1873 the estate comprised 3172 acres.
