Blaenau Gwent
Blaenau Gwent is a county borough in South Wales, sharing its name with a parliamentary constituency. It borders the unitary authority areas of Monmouthshire and Torfaen to the east, Caerphilly to the west and Powys to the north. Its main towns are Abertillery, Brynmawr, Ebbw Vale and Tredegar.
Valleys Radio
Valleys Radio was a British radio station broadcasting to the heads of the South Wales Valleys. The broadcast area was covered by two transmitters, 999kHz from the Aberdâr transmitter, and 1116kHz from the Ebbw Vale transmitter, with the Ebbw Vale signal being the comparatively stronger of the two. On 20 March 2009, UTV Radio announced Valleys Radio was to be sold or shut down within the next 4 weeks.
Ebbw Valley Railway
The Ebbw Valley Railway (Welsh: Rheilffordd Cwm Ebwy) is a branch line of the Great Western Main Line in South Wales. Arriva Trains Wales provides an hourly passenger service each way, between Ebbw Vale Parkway and Cardiff Central. The Great Western Railway (GWR) operated a passenger service on the line from the 1850s between Newport and Ebbw Vale. The line became part of British Railways' Western Region in 1948, following the nationalisation of the railways.
Festival Park, Ebbw Vale
Festival Park is a shopping centre in Ebbw Vale, Wales. Festival Park is located on the former Garden Festival of Wales site. It was left abandoned after the closure of the festival in 1992, but has since then being converted into a shopping outlet and tourist attraction. It now includes an owl sanctuary, fishing lake, gym, the Festival Church and remaining sculptures from the Garden Festival of Wales. Festival park is home to the UKs longest supertubing run and an adventure castle play park.
Ebbw Vale Parkway railway station
Ebbw Vale Parkway railway station (Welsh: Parcffordd Glyn Ebwy) is the current terminus of the Ebbw Valley Railway in Wales. The station opened on 6 February 2008 when services to and from Cardiff Central commenced after 46 years of being a freight-only line. Plans include extending services to Ebbw Vale Town and restoration of an hourly service to Newport. The station has been built on a site close to the former Victoria station in the Victoria area of the Ebbw Vale conurbation.
Mynydd Carn-y-cefn
Mynydd Carn-y-cefn is the name given to the broad ridge of high ground between the Ebbw Vale and the valley of the Ebbw Fach in the Valleys region of South Wales. It lies within the unitary area of Blaenau Gwent, formerly Monmouthshire. The broad-topped ridge runs NNW-SSE and achieves a summit height of 550 metres at a point crowned by a trig point at OS grid ref SO 187084 between Ebbw Vale and Blaina.
Cefn Manmoel
Cefn Manmoel is the name given to the broad ridge of high ground between the Sirhowy Valley and Ebbw Vale in the Valleys region of South Wales. It straddles the boundary between the unitary areas of Caerphilly and Blaenau Gwent. The NNW-SSE aligned ridge achieves a height of 504m at OS grid ref SO 166072. To the south it drops away to a broad saddle southeast of the village of Manmoel, beyond which lies Mynydd Pen-y-fan.
Ebbw Vale Steelworks
Ebbw Vale Steelworks was an integrated steel mill located in Ebbw Vale, South Wales. Developed from 1780, by the late 1930s it had become the largest steel mill in Europe. Nationalised after World War II, as the steel industry changed to bulk handling, iron and steel making was ceased in the 1970s, as the site was redeveloped as a specialised tinplate works.
