Port Penrhyn

Port Penrhyn is a harbour located just east of Bangor in north Wales at the confluence of the River Cegin with the Menai Strait. It was formerly of great importance as the main port for the export of slate from the Penrhyn Quarry, the largest slate quarry in the world at the end of the nineteenth century. It was built, and later expanded, by the Pennant (later Douglas-Pennant) family of the nearby Penrhyn Castle. Penrhyn is the Welsh word for 'promontory'.

Baron Hill (house)

Baron Hill is an estate in Beaumaris, Anglesey, Wales, named after the hill on which it stands. It was established in 1618, in preparation for Prince Henry of Wales's progress to Ireland, by Sir Richard Bulkeley as the family seat of the influential Bulkeley family. During the English Civil War, Richard's successor, Colonel Thomas Bulkeley, is said to have invited King Charles I to take possession of the house and set up his court there.

Beaumaris Gaol

Beaumaris Gaol is a disused jail located in Beaumaris, Anglesey, Wales. Although no longer in use it remains largely unaltered and is now a museum open to visitors, with around 30,000 visiting each year. The jail was designed by Joseph Hansom, designer of the Hansom cab, and was built in 1829. It was expanded in 1867 to accommodate approximately 30 inmates but was closed just 11 years later.

Castell Aberlleiniog

Castell Aberlleiniog (Castle of the River Lleiniog) is a motte and bailey fortress near the Welsh village of Llangoed on the Isle of Anglesey, built between 1080 and 1099 by Hugh d'Avranches, 1st Earl of Chester. It is about two miles distant from Beaumaris Castle, and was built atop a very steep hill. There are few historical documents that detail the events the castle has seen through its life, however some do survive, including a record of a siege in 1094 by Gruffydd ap Cynan.

Baron Hill Park

Baron Hill Park is an area of parkland north of the town of Beaumaris on Anglesey. It is part of the ancestral land-holding of the Bulkley family and contains the ruins of the former ancestral home, Baron Hill. Some 112 Ha of parkland is also a designated Site of special scientific interest largely because the woodland has remained largely undisturbed over very many years and is now host to a very wide range of lichen species, mostly epiphytic on trees.
