Burngrange mining disaster
Burngrange is an area of the Scottish village West Calder. Situated at the far west of the village it mainly consists of housing constructed for the areas mining industry in the early 20th century. On 10 January 1947, Burngrange was witness to its worst underground mining disaster, in which 15 miners perished. Burngrange Shale Mine was situated 16 miles south-west of Edinburgh in the Parish of West Calder in the County of Midlothian. It was owned by Young's Paraffin Light & Mineral Oil Co.
Almond Valley Light Railway
The Almond Valley Light Railway is a narrow gauge heritage railway running at the Almond Valley Heritage Trust site at Livingston, Scotland. The railway operates at weekends between Easter and the end of September and daily during some school holiday periods. There are two stations, both with waiting shelters and run round loops. A small two-road loco shed is provided at the Heritage centre end of the line. There is a storage siding here also.
Polbeth
Polbeth is a former oil shale mining village located about a mile from West Calder, and not far from Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland.
Harburn railway station
Harburn railway station was situated on the Caledonian Railway line between Carstairs railway station and Edinburgh. It was closed by the Beeching Axe. To the south were Cobbinshaw railway station and Auchengray railway station.
Eliburn
Eliburn is one of the newest parts of Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland and is located to the North-West side of the town. The area has mostly private housing rather than council housing, though Eliburn is under constant development with the building of both affordable council apartments and houses, as well as private houses and flats.
Bellsquarry
Bellsquarry is a small area in the south of Livingston next to Murieston, Scotland. Like Livingston Village and Livingston Station it became part of Livingston when the town was built in 1962. Bellsquarry still has a village hall and old buildings, however, there are no shops. The area has several fields surrounding it. There is a children's playpark and a wooded area with trails connecting Bellsquarry to Murieston, and a primary school.
Eliburn Reservoir
Eliburn Reservoir is a reservoir in Eliburn, Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland. It is a coarse fishery and is stocked with Common carp, Rudd, Perch, Crucian carp, Ide or Golden Orfe, Roach and a pair of wels catfish. Fishing competitions are held there. Eliburn is between Howden, Ladywell and Deans, and near St Johns Hospital.
West Calder High School
West Calder High School was opened in 1965 to take up to 750 pupils from the Calders Area of West Lothian. The Calders Area features East Calder, Mid Calder, and West Calder. The current enrollment of pupils in the school is around 900 pupils (2011).
