Blantyre mining disaster
The Blantyre mining disaster, which happened on the morning of 22 October 1877, in Blantyre, Scotland, was and remains Scotland’s worst mining accident. Pits No. 2 and No. 3 of William Dixon's Blantyre Colliery were the site of an explosion which killed 207 miners, the youngest being a boy of 11. It was known that fire damp was present in the pit and it is likely that this was ignited by a naked flame. The accident left 92 widows and 250 fatherless children.
Hillhouse, Hamilton
Hillhouse is a council-built housing estate on the western border of Hamilton in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. Civic amenities include Hillhouse Civic Centre, Hillhouse Library, and the Jock Stein Sports Centre and playing fields. Also in Hillhouse is the famous Burnbank Bowling Club, where Celtic manager Jock Stein was the Club's 2nd Champion in 1953.
High Earnock
High Earnock is a private housing estate in Hamilton, Scotland and is a subdivision of the ancient district of Earnock, along with Little Earnock, Earnock Estate, and Meikle Earnock. It was built in the 1980s and has views across Clydesdale towards Motherwell, Shotts, Hillhouse Earnock Estate and Little Earnock. The community is served by amenities in the neighbouring parent district of Earnock Estate as well as the nearby housing estate: Hillhouse.
Flemington, South Lanarkshire
Flemington was a small mining community on the outskirts of Uddingston. It existed from the early 1900s until the late 1930s and was located next to the mainline railway line, just off the road that links Blantyre to Uddingston, near Bothwell Castle. Once the mining ceased the village, like many others, ceased to exist and all that remains are the foundations of the pit houses.
High Blantyre Primary
High Blantyre Primary is a Scottish state sector school that provides education for children from four years until they are eleven years. Originally located near High Blantyre Cross, the building was a solid, imposing sandstone building featuring eight classrooms, located centrally around a hall/dining area. Next door was a similarly statuesque headmasters house.
Udston mining disaster
The Udston mining disaster occurred in Hamilton, Scotland on Saturday, 28 May 1887 when 73 miners died in a firedamp explosion at Udston Colliery. Caused, it is thought, by unauthorised shot firing the explosion is said to be Scotland's second worst coal mining disaster. Keir Hardie, then Secretary of the Scottish Miners' Federation, denounced the deaths as murder a few days later.

Calderside Academy
Calderside Academy is a Scottish secondary school in Blantyre. It was created by merging two local secondary schools (Blantyre High School and Earnock High School) on the land where Blantyre High School was. The school was officially opened by Fiona Hyslop MSP in November 2008. The Head Master is J S Dodds. The Academy has approximately 1400 pupils and around 100 teachers making it one of the largest schools in Scotland.
