The 2004 Open Championship was the 133rd Open Championship, played from 15–18 July at Royal Troon Golf Club in Troon, Scotland. Todd Hamilton held off Ernie Els in a playoff after carding a final round 69 on the Old Course. Phil Mickelson finished third, followed by Lee Westwood in fourth. Hamilton was the sixth consecutive American to win at Royal Troon. The purse was £4 million with a winner's share of £720,000.

The 1997 Open Championship was the 126th Open Championship, held from 17–20 July at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Troon, Scotland. Justin Leonard won his first major championship, the fifth consecutive American to win The Open at Royal Troon. Five strokes back after a 72 in the third round, he shot a final round 65 (–6) to win by three strokes over runners-up Jesper Parnevik and Darren Clarke.

The 1973 Open Championship was the 102nd Open Championship, played from 11–14 July at Troon Golf Club in Troon, Scotland. Tom Weiskopf won his only major championship by four strokes over runners-up Neil Coles and Johnny Miller, the winner of the U.S. Open a month earlier. Gene Sarazen, 71, made a hole-in-one in the first round at the 8th hole, a 126-yard par-3 named the "Postage Stamp," due to its small green.
