Alloway Kirk

The old Alloway Kirk is a ruin in Alloway, South Ayrshire, Scotland, celebrated as the scene of the witches' dance in the poem Tam o' Shanter by Robert Burns. There is a still a Church of Scotland parish church in Alloway; the minister (since 1999) is the Reverend Neil A. McNaught. The new church building was opened for worship on 10 October 1858 and the first minister was called in 1859. As originally built, the new church was rectangular.

River Doon

The River Doon is a river in East Ayrshire and South Ayrshire, Scotland. The river flows 23 miles from Loch Doon, joining the Firth of Clyde just south of Ayr. Its course is generally north-westerly, passing near to the town of Dalmellington, and through the villages of Patna, Dalrymple, and Alloway, birthplace of Robert Burns. The source of the Doon is Loch Enoch, high in the Galloway Hills.

Belmont Academy

Belmont Academy is the largest secondary school in Ayr and the 6th largest in Scotland. The Academy is inter-faith and state-run by South Ayrshire Council. In 2008 the school transferred from the 48-year-old campus into a new building, which was opened to pupils in August 2008.

Seafield, Ayr

Seafield is a southern district of Ayr, Scotland. The district is a popular retirement place with scenic views overlooking Ayr beach. The area is also home to the old racecourse of Ayr which is now used for golfing. Sir William Arrol M.P. , the engineer who constructed the Clyde, Tay (No. 2) and Forth Bridges, lived at the Seafield estate. Seafield House later became a maternity and children's hospital and has closed since the opening of the new Ayr Hospital.

Burns Cottage

Burns Cottage, the first home of Robert Burns is located in Alloway, South Ayrshire, Scotland. It was built by his father, William Burness in 1757. Burns, Scotland's national poet, was born there on 25 January 1759. It is a simple two-roomed clay and thatch cottage and has been fully restored to become part of Robert Burns Birthplace Museum.

Roman Catholic Diocese of Galloway

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Galloway (Latin Dioecesis Candidae Casae o Gallovidianus) is an ecclesiastical territory or diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland. The diocese of Galloway had broken allegiance with Rome in 1560, and disappeared in 1689. It was resurrected by the Roman Catholic Church on March 4, 1878, and is now based in the town of Ayr. The present bishop of the diocese is the Right Reverend John Cunningham.

Brig o' Doon

The Brig o' Doon is a late medieval bridge used as the setting for the final verse of the Robert Burns's poem Tam o' Shanter. In this scene Tam is on horseback and is being chased by Nannie the witch. He is just able to escape her by crossing the bridge (over a running stream) narrowly avoiding her attack as she is only able to grab the horse's tail which comes away in her hands. The bridge is located near Alloway in South Ayrshire and crosses the River Doon. It was rebuilt in the 18th century.

Cambusdoon

Cambusdoon was a cricket ground in Ayr, Scotland. The first recorded match held on the ground was also the grounds first first-class match when Scotland played against Ireland in 1958. A further first-class match was played there when Scotland played Ireland in 1974. The ground held its final recorded match in 1990 when Scotland Under-23s played Ireland Under-23s. Used by Ayr Cricket Club, the club moved from the ground in 1997 to the purpose built Cambusdoon New Ground.
