Jarlshof
Jarlshof is the best known prehistoric archaeological site in Shetland, Scotland. It lies near the southern tip of the Shetland Mainland and has been described as "one of the most remarkable archaeological sites ever excavated in the British Isles". It contains remains dating from 2500 BC up to the 17th century AD. The Bronze Age settlers left evidence of several small oval houses with thick stone walls and various artefacts including a decorated bone object.
Sumburgh Head
Sumburgh Head is located at the southern tip of the Shetland Mainland in northern Scotland. The head is a 100 m high rocky spur capped by the Sumburgh Head Lighthouse. The Old Norse name was Dunrøstar høfdi, it means "The Head onto the Thunderous Noise", referring to the noise of Sumburgh Roost. The cliffs are home to large numbers of seabirds and the area is an RSPB nature reserve. Sumburgh Airport lies immediately to the north of the head, and is Shetland's main airport.
RAF Sumburgh
RAF Sumburgh was located on the southern tip of the mainland island of the Shetland Islands, and was home to half of No. 404 Squadron RCAF,. At the outbreak of World War II the airstrip at the Sumburgh Links was taken over by the Air Ministry. By 1941 there were 3 operational runways at Sumburgh Aerodrome from which a variety of RAF aircraft operated. The Opening of Sumburgh Airport Sumburgh Links was surveyed and the grass strips laid out by Capt. E.E.

Virkie is the most southerly district of Shetland, other than Fair Isle and is best defined as the area south of the Ward Hill in Dunrossness, also locally referred to as "below da hill" (below the hill), or "da laich Ness" (the low headland). Virkie encompasses the following settlements; Exnaboe, Toab, Scatness, and Sumburgh.
