Loch Leven (Highlands)
Loch Leven 'is a sea loch on the west coast of Scotland. It is spelled Loch Lyon in Timothy Pont's map of the area and is pronounced Li' un. The local Gaelic pronunciation is Lee' oon Loch Leven extends 8+⁄4 miles, varying in width between 220 yards and just over a 1 mile . It opens onto Camus a' Chois at North Ballachulish, part of Loch Linnhe at its western end.
Beinn a' Bheithir
Beinn a' Bheithir ('Mountain of the Thunderbolt') is a mountain lying to the south of Ballachulish, on the south side of Loch Leven in the Scottish Highlands. It boasts two Munro summits: the higher peak Sgorr Dhearg lies about 2 km east of Sgorr Dhonuill (Sgurr Dhòmhnaill). The mountain forms a horseshoe shape, with ridges pointing north enclosing the corrie of Gleann a' Chaolais (Glenachulish). The lower slopes on this side are cloaked in conifer plantations.
Glencoe Lochan
Glencoe Lochan is a tract of forest located just north of Glencoe village in the Scottish Highlands. It was planted/transplanted from the Pacific Northwest of Canada in the nineteenth century by Donald Alexander Smith, 1st Baron Strathcona and Mount Royal. After acquiring the Glencoe Estate in 1895, Donald Alexander Smith and his wife, Isabella Sophia Hardisty, moved from Canada to Scotland. Soon after their arrival, Isabella became increasingly homesick for her ancestral lands in Canada.
River Coe
The River Coe rises at the north-eastern base of Buachaille Etive Beag and flows west along Glen Coe, Scotland. After dramatic waterfalls at the Pass of Glen Coe. It runs through the small Loch Achtriochtan before it turns north west. It then runs past the site of the Massacre of Glencoe and passes through Glencoe village, shortly before flowing into the sea loch of Loch Leven (a salt-water arm of Loch Linnhe) at Invercoe.
Eilean Munde
Eilean Munde is a small island in Loch Leven, close to Ballachulish. It is the site of a chapel built by St. Fintan Mundus (also known as Saint Fintan Munnu), who travelled here from Iona in the 7th Century. The church was burnt in 1495 and rebuilt in the 16th Century. The last service in the church was held in July, 1653. The island is the site of a graveyard once used by the Stewarts of Ballachulish, the MacDonalds of Glencoe and the Camerons of Callart.
A828 road
The A828 road is a primary route along the western coast of Scotland At its northern end the A828 meets the A82 at South Ballachulish and it runs to a junction with the A85 at Connel; the total length being some 26 miles . It passes through Highland and Argyll and Bute council areas. The area it runs through, the Appin, is remote and this is evidenced by the fact that the only other numbered road it has a junction with is the minor B845.
Glencoe House
Glencoe House is a category B listed four-storey Victorian estate house in Glencoe, Lochaber, Highland, Scotland. Designed by Rowand Anderson, it was built in 1895 by Lord Strathcona for his wife, Isabella. It was afterwards owned by NHS Highland, and known as Glencoe Hospital. The property was put up for sale after local people failed to raise the £450,000 necessary to buy it under the Land Reform Act.
