The Tay Bridge (sometimes unofficially the Tay Rail Bridge) is a railway bridge approximately 2.75 miles (3.5 kilometres) long that spans the Firth of Tay in Scotland, between the city of Dundee and the suburb of Wormit in Fife. As with the Forth Bridge, the Tay Bridge has also been called the Tay Rail Bridge since the construction of a road bridge over the firth, the Tay Road Bridge. Wormit

Wormit is a small town on the banks of the Firth of Tay in north-east Fife, Scotland. It is most famous for its location at the southern end of the Tay Rail Bridge. Its railway station (closed in 1969) was on a closed branch line which left the main line (Edinburgh/Dundee) railway immediately at the south end of the Bridge to serve Wormit/Newport. The closed Wormit station was later dismantled and rebuilt at the heritage Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway to the west of Edinburgh.

Tay Bridge disaster

The Tay Bridge disaster occurred during a violent storm on 28 December 1879 when the first Tay Rail Bridge collapsed while a train was passing over it from Wormit to Dundee, killing all aboard. The bridge – designed by Sir Thomas Bouch – used lattice girders supported by iron piers, with cast iron columns and wrought iron cross-bracing. The piers were narrower and their cross-bracing was less extensive and robust than on previous similar designs by Bouch.
