Traditionally, a pitcoudie was a donkey, mule or work-horse which ferried coal and slag from the coal mines - spending most of its life underground. The area of Pitcoudie today exists on what was once an extensive range of mining-shafts and pits.

The Kingdom Centre is the main shopping destination in Glenrothes, located in the town centre. It is the largest indoor shopping centre in Fife and is one of the largest single-level indoor shopping centres in Scotland with around 40,000 sq m (430,000 sq ft) of (gross) floorspace. The centre has some of the highest levels of footfall in Fife and currently contains over 100 shop units as well as a variety of cafes, the town's central library and the Rothes Halls- the town's theatre/civic centre.
Victoria Hospital (Kirkcaldy)
Victoria Hospital is a large hospital situated to the north of the town centre in Kirkcaldy, in Fife, Scotland. As one of two main hospitals in Fife, this serves both the town and surrounding Mid-Fife area. The Victoria has been run by Fife Acute Hospital NHS trust since 1999, formerly the Kirkcaldy Acute Hospital trust. Construction of the hospital began in 1955, surrounding the site of the sanatorium and fever hospital, completed between 1899 and 1910.
