Linlithgow and East Falkirk (UK Parliament constituency)
Linlithgow and East Falkirk is a county constituency of the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, created for use in the 2005 general election. It replaced most of Falkirk East and Linlithgow. The constituency covers the eastern portion of the Falkirk council area and the western portion of the West Lothian council area.
Polmont rail accident
The Polmont rail accident occurred on 30 July 1984 at Polmont, near Falkirk, Scotland, when an express train from Edinburgh to Glasgow, travelling at high speed, struck a cow which had wandered onto the track near Polmont station. Several of the carriages were derailed, resulting in 13 deaths and 61 injuries. The accident led to a debate about the safety of push-pull trains on British Rail.
Avon Gorge, Falkirk
The Avon Gorge, Falkirk is a small wooded gorge in Falkirk, Scotland. An area of 19.05 hectares of the gorge is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest; it was notified in 1986. The steep wooded banks constitute one of the few remaining ancient, semi-natural woodland sites in Falkirk District.
Avondale Landfill
The Avondale Landfill is a major Scottish landfill located in Polmont, off junction 4 of the M9 motorway. Avondale takes large volumes of waste from the Forth Valley and some from West Lothian. Avondale has the ability to accept Non-Hazardous, Stable Non-Reactive Hazardous waste including asbestos/gypsum and compliant Hazardous wastes. This is the first and currently only landfill with the ability to accept Hazardous waste to landfill in Scotland under the new Landfill Directive.
HM Prison Polmont
Her Majesty's Young Offenders Institution Polmont is the largest of its kind in Scotland. Despite its name, the institution is located in Reddingmuirhead in the Falkirk region, and not in Polmont. It is designed to hold up to 454 inmates between the ages of 16 and 21, although there have been several reports and complaints about the literal figures. Reports of living conditions have also been criticized, including an alleged lack of food for inmates and the practice of slopping out.
Westfield, West Lothian
Westfield (Scottish Gaelic: an t-Achadh Siar) is a small village of around 180 houses located in the parish of Torphichen in West Lothian, Scotland. The village was focused for many decades on a local paper mill that closed in the 1990s. Much of the housing in the village was or is owned by West Lothian Council but there have been recurrent plans for major new private housebuilding since the 1970s, as yet unfulfilled. The village has a primary school and post office/shop.
