Sweetheart Abbey
Sweetheart Abbey, 8 miles south of Dumfries, near to the Nith in south-west Scotland, was a Cistercian monastery, founded in 1275 by Dervorguilla of Galloway, daughter of Alan, Lord of Galloway, in memory of her husband John de Balliol. His embalmed heart, in a casket of ivory and silver, was buried alongside her when she died; the monks at the Abbey then renamed the Abbey in tribute to her. Their son, also John, became king of Scotland but his reign was tragic and short.
National Museum of Costume
The National Museum of Costume was located at Shambellie House, in New Abbey, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland and it formed part of the National Museums of Scotland. The museum allowed a look at fashion and the lifestyle of the wealthy from the 1850s to the 1950s. The clothes were presented in lifelike room settings. In January 2013, National Museums Scotland announced that the National Museum of Costume was to close and the site would not reopen for 2013.

Glencaple
Glencaple is a small settlement in the Dumfries and Galloway area of Scotland. Situated on the banks of the River Nith, it once served as a port for nearby Dumfries. Dumfries F.C. play their home matches at Norfolk Park in Glencaple. Glencaple is the home of the Dumfries and Galloway Canine Rescue Centre. On 7th September 2012, Princess Alexandra opened the Caerlaverock Shop and Tearoom in Glencaple, accompanied by the Lord-Lieutenant of Dumfries, Jean Tulloch.

Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary is the main hospital in Dumfries. The hospital serves both the town of Dumfries and the entire catchment area of South West Scotland, with a population of at least 147,000. The hospital is run by the Dumfries and Galloway Health Board (also known as Dumfries & Galloway NHS Board) and a supporter of the Princess Royal Trust for the Carers Hospital project.

Dumfries and Galloway College is a further education college in Dumfries and Galloway, with campuses in Dumfries and Stranraer. It offers a wide range of courses, including business, computing, construction, creative industries, education, engineering, hairdressing, beauty and complimentary therapies, health and social studies, hospitality and sports and recreation. In 2008 their campus moved from Heathhall to its new campus, which shares its library with the University of the West of Scotland.
Dumfries Castle
Dumfries Castle was a royal castle that was located in Dumfries, Scotland. It was sited by the River Nith, in the area now known as Castledykes Park. A motte and bailey castle was built in the 12th century. The town was created a royal burgh by King William the Lion in 1186. The castle was enlarged and rebuilt in stone in 1214. King Alexander III of Scotland visited the castle in 1264 to plan an expedition against the Isle of Man.
