Kilchurn Castle
Kilchurn Castle is a ruined 15th and 17th century structure on a rocky peninsula at the northeastern end of Loch Awe, in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Access to the Castle is sometimes restricted by higher-than-usual levels of water in the Loch, at which times the site effectively becomes a temporary island. It was the ancestral home of the Campbells of Glen Orchy, who later became the Earls of Breadalbane also known as the Breadalbane family branch, of the Clan Campbell.
Ben Cruachan Quarry Branch
The Ben Cruachan Quarry Branch was a short standard gauge branch line that was built to serve a granite quarry on Ben Cruachan in Scotland. The branch connected with the Callander and Oban Railway about one kilometre east of Loch Awe railway station. It was built as a zig zag railway so as to reach the quarry which was situated high on the steep mountainside. During construction of the West Highland Railway, material was taken by rail from this branch for the viaducts on that line.
St Conan's Tower
St Conan's Tower is a 19th century granite-built country house, near Lochawe in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Designed and built by Walter Douglas Campbell, great-grandfather of the Duke of Argyll, St Conan's Tower was intended as a winter home for the family. The granite for the house was quarried from Ben Cruachan, the mountain behind it.
Innis Chonan
Innis Chonain or Innischonan is an island in Loch Awe, Scotland. Walter Douglas Campbell, great-grandfather of the Duke of Argyll built a large house on Innis Chonain and St Conan's Tower in Lochawe as a winter home for the family. Walter was a self-made architect and delighted in building unusual properties, including St Conan’s Kirk, which is on the mainland nearby, an eccentric blend of church styles.
Fraoch Eilean, Loch Lomond
Fraoch Eilean is a small island in Loch Lomond, Scotland. Its name means "heather island" in Scottish Gaelic. It is near Luss on the mainland, and according to legend, was used as its prison, indeed on Charles Ross's 1792 Plan of Dunbartonshire, Loch Lomond and its Environs, Fraoch Eilean is marked as "Luss Prison". It is covered in heather and brambles.
