Seil
One of the Slate Islands, Seil is a small island on the east side of the Firth of Lorn, 7 miles southwest of Oban, in Scotland. Seil has been linked to the mainland by bridge since the late eighteenth century.
Easdale
Easdale is one of the Slate Islands, in the Firth of Lorn, Scotland. Once the centre of the British slate industry, there has been some recent island regeneration. A ferry sails from Easdale to Ellenabeich on the nearby island of Seil, which is separated from Easdale by only a narrow channel. Confusingly, Ellenabeich is sometimes known as Easdale as a result of its traditional connections with the island.
Torsa
Torsa (occasionally Torsay) is one of the Slate Islands in Argyll and Bute, Scotland. Lying east of Luing and south of Seil, the island was inhabited until the 1960s. There is now only one house on the island, which is used for holiday lets. Its main industry is farming, with cattle brought over from the neighbouring island of Luing. The Luing cattle were bred for their hardiness. The island is connected to its smaller partner, Torsa Beag (Gaelic for little Torsa).
Insh, Slate Islands
Insh is an uninhabited island west of the island of Seil in the Firth of Lorn, Scotland. One of the Slate Islands, Insh Island lies a mile (1.5 km) northeast of Ellenabeich in Seil. It is separated from it by the Sound of Insh. The island rises to 69m (226 feet) and is 36 ha in area. The private owner is believed to occasionally live in a cave at the north end. The Northern sea fan is found in the waters off Insh Island.
Ellenabeich
Ellenabeich is a small village on the isle of Seil - an island on the east side of the Firth of Lorn, 7 miles (11 km) southwest of Oban, in Scotland. It is a former slate-mining village and is where parts of Ring of Bright Water were filmed. Seil is one of the Slate Islands. The village gets its name from the former slate island within proximity of the village, called Eilean nam Beitheach. The island was mined out of existence and its name is now the current Scottish Gaelic name of the village.
Cuan Sound
Cuan Sound is a narrow channel, 200 metres wide, in Argyll, western Scotland. It separates Seil Island and Luing and later becomes the Firth of Lorn. It has a very strong current. In Cuan Sound, the north-going stream begins 4.5 hours after high water and sets westward; the south-going stream begins 1.5 hours before high water and sets eastward; the streams attain a rate of 7 knots at springs. This coast from Cuan Sound to Easdale Bay is in many places foul and rocky for 1.5 cables of it.
