Marlborough College
Marlborough College is a co-educational independent school for day and boarding pupils, located in Marlborough, Wiltshire. Founded in 1843 for the education of the sons of Church of England clergy, the school now accepts both boys and girls of all beliefs. Currently there are just over 800 pupils, approximately one third of whom are female. New pupils are admitted at the ages of 13+ ("Shell entry") and 16 (Lower Sixth).
Lockeridge
Lockeridge (pop. approximately 290) is a village in Wiltshire, England. It lies at the edge of the West Woods in the Kennet Valley, 2.9 miles west of Marlborough, 3.1 miles east of Avebury and 10.5 miles south of Swindon. Lockeridge and its surroundings have provided evidence of Stone and Bronze Age activity in the area. Field enclosures close to the village indicate Roman occupation, whilst the village itself appears in the Domesday Book of 1086.
Marlborough and Ramsbury Rural District
Marlborough and Ramsbury was a rural district in Wiltshire, England from 1935 to 1974. It was formed by a County Review Order in 1935 as a merger of the Marlborough Rural District and the Ramsbury Rural District. It entirely surrounded the municipal borough of Marlborough. In 1974, it was abolished under the Local Government Act 1972, becoming part of the new Kennet district.
Clatford
Clatford is a small hamlet situated approximately one mile from the village of Manton and about three miles from Marlborough, which is the nearest notable town, in Wiltshire, England. Clatford is a rural community made up of several houses clustered around a central crossroads with several other houses spread further out. A notable point of interest is the local hotel, West Woods, known for its spectacular bluebells at the appropriate time of year.
Manton, Wiltshire
Manton is a small village in Wiltshire on the outskirts of Marlborough just off the A4 Bath Road. Manton village is part of the Parish of Preshute, and as such includes St Georges Church, and Preshute Primary The Outside Chance is the only pub in the village. The village primary school is Preshute Primary School, which feeds into St Johns Community College in Marlborough. It is home to the historic Manton House Stables, currently operated by Thoroughbred horse trainer Brian Meehan.
Marlborough Castle
Marlborough Castle, locally known and recorded in historical documents as The Mount, was an 11th-century royal castle located in the civil parish of Marlborough, a market town in the English county of Wiltshire, on the Old Bath Road, the old main road from London to Bath. The barrow on which the fortification was built, perhaps the "barrow of Maerla" seems to be a prehistoric earthwork which formed the motte of the Norman Marlborough Castle.
Preshute
Preshute is a small village in Wiltshire along the A4 Bath Road on the outskirts of Marlborough beyond Marlborough College. There has been a lot of recent building in the north side of the village which is perceived as an extension of Marlborough. The Parish Church of St George is well hidden on the south side and only accessible by road via Manton, Wiltshire which forms part of the Parish and where and both Preshute Primary School is situated.
Marlborough White Horse
The Marlborough White Horse, also called the Preshute White Horse, is a hill figure on Granham Hill, a fairly shallow slope of the downland above the village of Preshute, near Marlborough in the county of Wiltshire, England. Dating from 1804, it is one of several such white horses to be seen around Great Britain. Many distant views of the horse are obstructed by trees, but it can be seen from parts of the town of Marlborough.
