Bowood House
Bowood is a grade I listed Georgian country house with interiors by Robert Adam and a garden designed by Lancelot "Capability" Brown. It is adjacent to the village of Derry Hill, halfway between Calne and Chippenham in Wiltshire, England. The greater part of the house was demolished in 1956.
Sandy Lane, Wiltshire
Sandy Lane is a hamlet situated between the towns of Chippenham and Devizes in Wiltshire, and between the villages of Bromham and Derry Hill on the A342 road. It is 3 km south of the old Roman Road running from Bath to London, now called the A4, and was called Verlucio in Roman times. The 'village' pub is called The George Inn. Until 1864, Sandy Lane belonged to the civil parish of Derry Hill, but then it was transferred to the new parish of Chittoe.
Sandridge Park
Sandridge Park, near Stoke Gabriel, Devon, is an English country house in the Italianate style, designed by John Nash around 1805 for the Dowager Lady Ashburton, née Elizabeth Baring. Sandridge, on high ground at the head of the River Dart estuary, was held by the Sandridges under the Bishop of Exeter in Henry II's reign. Spye Park
Spye Park is a 90.3 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Wiltshire, notified in 1951. The historic house which stood there, near the great Roman road from London to Bath, had been twice destroyed by fire, most recently in 1974. The new owner, as of 2005, was planning to rebuild a Palladian house. Spye Park is about two miles (3 km) to the north of Bromham village in Wiltshire.
A342 road
The A342 is an A road that runs from Pewsham near Chippenham, Wiltshire to Andover, Hampshire. The road begins at the A4 junction just outside of the small village Pewsham, to the east of Chippenham. It heads south past the village of Derry Hill towards Devizes, briefly meeting with the A3102 near Sandy Lane. Just outside Devizes the road meets the A361 and once in the centre of town meets the A360.
Black Dog Halt railway station
Black Dog Halt was opened 1863-11-03 by the Great Western Railway for Lord Lansdowne of Bowood House. Lord Lansdowne had a special compartment in one of the Calne line's autocoaches. Eventually, Lord Lansdowne was persuaded to allow the halt to be used by the public. After the British Rail take over the halt was turned into a request stop. In 1965 the halt was closed and, soon afterwards, the buildings were demolished.
Bromham and Rowde Halt railway station
Bromham and Rowde Halt was the railway station serving Bromham and Rowde in Wiltshire, England. The station was a stop on the Devizes Branch Line, between Seend and Devizes After the completion of the Devizes line, the junction at Holt allowed the fastest route from London to the West Country. However the Devizes line lost to competition and returned to a branch line in 1900.
