Loxley, Warwickshire
Loxley, Warwickshire is a village near Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. It has been claimed that Robin Hood was born and raised here. Some believe that a certain Robert Fitz Oto is the true Robin Hood, as he owned Loxley manor and his tombstone lies by Loxley parish church. Similar claims are made by Loxley, South Yorkshire, a suburb of Sheffield. The village gave its name to a hall of residence at the University of Warwick, within the Westwood campus.
Via Gellia
Via Gellia is a steep sided wooded dry valley and road in Derbyshire. It is probably named after (or by) Phillip Eyre Gell in a mock Latin style; he was responsible for building the road through the valley, and the Gells claimed Roman descent. At its lower (eastern) end is the village of Cromford, near to the town of Wirksworth and the Georgian cotton mill, Cromford Mill, built by inventor/entrepreneur Richard Arkwright. At the western end is the hamlet of Grangemill.
Walton Hall, Warwickshire
Walton Hall is a 19th century country mansion at Walton, near Wellesbourne, Warwickshire, once owned by the late entertainer Danny La Rue, now in use as an hotel. It is a Grade II* listed building. The Manor of Walton was owned by the Lestrange family from the 15th century. In 1541 Barbara Lestrange, heiress of Walton married Robert Mordaunt. Their son Lestrange Mordaunt was created 1st Baronet Mordaunt in 1611.
Bath House, Warwickshire
The Bath House was built in 1748 for Sir Charles Mordaunt of the nearby Walton Hall mansion, near Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwickshire. It was designed by the architect Sanderson Miller. As well as the bath chamber, the building incorporates an elegant octagonal room above, which was used by bathers to recover after their cold baths. The room is unusually decorated with icicle-like plaster work to the ceilings, and with sea shells set into the plasterwork decorating the walls.
