Maer Hall
The large 17th century stone built country house and estate of Maer Hall dominates the village of Maer, Staffordshire. Its location in the district of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, England, is attractively rural, but fairly close to the pottery manufacturing area around Stoke-on-Trent which attracted its most famous owner Josiah Wedgwood II. His nephew Charles Darwin often visited Maer, and married Josiah's daughter Emma.

Loggerheads and Whitmore ward is a ward in the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme. It covers, amongst others, the villages of Knighton, Hales, Staffordshire, Mucklestone, Staffordshire, Ashley, Staffordshire, Loggerheads and Whitmore. The Councillors for this ward since 3 May 2012 are Ashley Howells, David Loades and Tracey Peers. All three represent the Conservative Party on Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council.
Newcastle-under-Lyme Rural District
Newcastle-under-Lyme Rural District was a rural district in the county of Staffordshire. It was formed in 1894 with the civil parishes of Ashley, Audley Rural, Balterley, Betley, Chapel and Hill Chorlton, Clayton, Keele, Madeley, Maer, Mucklestone, Tyrley and Whitmore. It was abolished in 1974, by virtue of the Local Government Act 1972, when it was absorbed into the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme.
Whitmore Hall
Whitmore Hall is the home of the Cavenagh-Mainwaring family at Whitmore, Staffordshire. A Grade I listed building, the hall was designated a house of outstanding architectural and historical interest and is a fine example of a small Carolinian style manor house. The Whitmore estate was acquired by the Mainwaring family when Edward Mainwaring of Biddulph married the Whitmore heiress Alice Boghay in the 16th century. Their descendants have owned the estate ever since.
