Monmouth Rebellion
The Monmouth Rebellion, also known as The Revolt of the West or The West Country rebellion, was an attempt to overthrow James II, who had become King of England, Scotland and Ireland upon the death of his elder brother Charles II on 6 February 1685. James II was a Roman Catholic, and some Protestants under his rule opposed his kingship. James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, an illegitimate son of Charles II, claimed to be rightful heir to the throne and attempted to displace James II.
RAF Weston Zoyland
RAF Weston Zoyland is a former World War II airfield in Somerset, England. The airfield is located approximately 4 miles east-southeast of Bridgwater; about 125 miles west-southwest of London Opened in 1944, it was used by both the Royal Air Force and United States Army Air Forces. During the war it was used primarily as transport airfield. After the war it was used as a reserve RAF Fighter Command airfield until 1958.
Bawdrip Halt railway station
Bawdrip Halt was a railway station at Bawdrip on the Bridgwater branch of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway. Although the line had opened in 1890, station facilities at Bawdrip were not provided until 7 July 1923, after petitioning by local people. The new halt was surprisingly popular, with 2,185 passengers using it between 7 July and 29 September 1923. It consisted of a single concrete platform 140 feet long; a waiting shelter was provided during 1924.
Burtle Priory
Burtle Priory (also known as Burtle Moor Priory) originated as a hermitage on a site called Sprauellissmede (or Sprawlesmede), in Burtle, Somerset, England. It was endowed by William son of Godfrey of Eddington in 1199. It was later known as St Stephens chapel and by 1312 a house of the Augustinian Canons Regular. In 1535 the priory was worth £6 5s. 2d. The present day church of St Philip and St James Church stands on the site of the Priory.
